Ethoate-methyl

Ethoate-methyl

Description

Mode of action

Ethametsulfuron-methyl is a systemic herbicide belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical class.

It acts by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which is essential for the synthesis of branched-chain amino acids.

By blocking the synthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine, the herbicide stops cell division in plant meristems.

The active ingredient is absorbed through leaves and roots and is translocated throughout the weed's vascular system.

Growth stops shortly after treatment, with weed death usually occurring within one to three weeks post-application.

What it targets

This herbicide is primarily used for controlling a wide range of broad-leaved weeds in various crops.

It is particularly effective against cruciferous weeds, making it highly valuable in oilseed rape cultivation.

It successfully manages common agricultural weeds like wild mustard, wild radish, and shepherd's purse.

The product is also effective against several annual broad-leaved weed species when applied at the seedling stage.

  • Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis)
  • Wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum)
  • Redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus)
  • Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris)
  • Field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense)

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the targeted weed species and the developmental stage of the crop.

It is most effective when applied to actively growing weeds in the early cotyledon or 2-to-4-leaf stage.

The use of adjuvants or surfactants is highly recommended to improve leaf penetration and wetting.

Application should ideally occur when air temperatures are between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius for optimal absorption.

Uniform coverage of the target area is crucial to ensure consistent control across the entire field.

Restrictions

Due to its soil persistence, crop rotation plans must be carefully managed after using this herbicide.

Precautions should be taken to prevent drift, as the product is highly toxic to non-target sensitive crops.

Protective clothing and safety equipment are required during mixing and application to prevent skin or eye exposure.

Excessive application rates can potentially cause temporary phytotoxicity or crop injury under stress conditions.

Storage should be strictly in a cool, dry, and ventilated place, keeping the product in its original containers away from moisture.
