Dicrotophos
Description
Mode of action
Dicrotophos belongs to the organophosphate class of chemicals. It acts primarily as a systemic insecticide and acaricide with strong contact and stomach action against a broad spectrum of pests.
The mode of action involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the nervous system of insects. This leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing continuous nerve impulses, resulting in paralysis and death of the insect.
Due to its systemic properties, the active ingredient is absorbed by the plant tissues and translocated through the vascular system. This allows the chemical to protect new growth and parts of the plant not directly covered during the application.
Dicrotophos is absorbed relatively quickly by the plant, providing residual protection against pests that feed on plant juices. This systemic activity is crucial for targeting pests that are otherwise difficult to reach with contact-only chemicals.
The compound remains effective under various environmental conditions, maintaining its activity within the plant tissue for an extended period, which helps in managing population surges of harmful insects.
What it targets
Dicrotophos is effective against a wide array of agricultural pests, including aphids, thrips, mites, and various coleopteran species. It is commonly utilized in the production of crops such as cotton, corn, and soybeans.
It is specifically useful for protecting generative parts of plants, such as flowers and fruits, from damage caused by sucking and chewing insects. This ensures the protection of yield potential and agricultural product quality.
The insecticide is also employed to control hidden-feeding insects, such as leaf miners, which reside within the plant structure. Its systemic translocation allows it to reach these pests effectively.
By controlling vector insects, dicrotophos also plays a secondary role in preventing the spread of viral plant diseases across fields. This makes it a valuable tool in comprehensive integrated pest management programs.
The efficacy of dicrotophos is highly regarded in areas where high pest pressure requires a rapid and systemic solution to prevent significant crop loss throughout the growing season.
Restrictions
Dicrotophos is classified as highly toxic to humans, mammals, and bees. Strict adherence to personal protective equipment protocols is required during handling, mixing, and application to avoid exposure.
Application during the blooming stage is strictly prohibited due to high toxicity to pollinators. Measures must be taken to prevent drift into neighboring areas that may be attractive to honeybees and other beneficial insects.
Compliance with pre-harvest intervals is essential to ensure that residues in harvested crops remain within safe regulatory limits. Over-application can lead to unacceptable levels of chemical residue.
The substance is extremely hazardous to aquatic life. All precautions must be taken to prevent contamination of water bodies, drainage systems, or agricultural runoff through proper disposal and containment.
To prevent the development of resistance, it is recommended to rotate dicrotophos with insecticides from different chemical groups. Its use should be guided by economic threshold assessments to minimize environmental impact.
