Active ingredient

Copper complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline with salicylic acid

Description

Mode of action

This group of substances belongs to the class of organometallic fungicides with contact action, effectively combining the biocidal properties of copper with the systemic potential of hydroxyquinoline derivatives. The copper complex of 8-hydroxyquinoline disrupts the metabolic processes of pathogens by inhibiting key enzymatic reactions essential for fungal survival.

Salicylic acid, incorporated into the complex, acts as a synergist and a natural inducer of Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR). It stimulates the plant’s own defense mechanisms, promoting the synthesis of pathogenesis-related proteins and phytoalexins, which enhances the plant's overall resistance to infections.

The compound demonstrates strong inhibition of fungal spore germination. Copper ions in the complex penetrate the cell membranes of pathogens, causing protein denaturation and rapid cell death, while providing a protective coating on the plant surface.

The products exhibit significant antiseptic properties, suppressing bacterial microflora on the surface of seeds and vegetative parts of plants. This dual-action effect allows for effective control even at low application rates.

A distinctive feature of this group is its resistance to rain-washing. Due to the stable chelate structure, the active ingredient adheres firmly to the plant epidermis, ensuring long-lasting protective efficacy even under challenging weather conditions.

What it targets

The complex is primarily used for the control of fungal and bacterial plant diseases. It is effective against pathogens belonging to Oomycetes, Ascomycetes, and Fungi Imperfecti groups.

It is highly effective against powdery mildew, various leaf spots, rusts, and rots affecting cereals, vegetables, and horticultural crops. The substance is also reliable in managing downy mildew and late blight outbreaks.

It is extensively used for seed treatment. By eliminating pathogens responsible for seed decay, seedling blights, and smut diseases, it ensures high germination rates and protects young seedlings during the initial growth stages.

In pomology and horticulture, it is employed to suppress bacterial fire blight and other localized bacterial infections. Preventive applications significantly reduce the pathogen load within the orchard or nursery environment.

The compound is beneficial for greenhouse vegetable production, preventing damping-off diseases and soil-borne infections, which facilitates the development of a healthy root system in nursery-grown plants.

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the crop type, the method of application (foliar spraying or seed treatment), and the level of disease pressure present at the site.

Standard field application rates range from 0.5 to 1.5 liters per hectare. In orchard management, dosage adjustment is necessary based on the canopy size and the required water volume to ensure complete coverage.

The timing of applications should coincide with plant phenological stages and weather forecasts. Proactive, preventive spraying is recommended to establish a protective barrier before mass infection occurs.

For seed dressing, it is crucial to follow the recommended dosage per ton of seeds, ensuring uniform distribution of the product across the entire surface of the seed material.

Repeat treatments should be performed at intervals of 10–14 days. During periods of rapid foliage growth or high rainfall, the interval may need to be shortened to maintain sufficient fungicidal concentration on the leaves.

Restrictions

Users must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during handling to avoid contact with skin, eyes, or inhalation of sprays. Standard safety protocols for pesticide application must be strictly followed.

Mixing with highly alkaline pesticides is not recommended, as it can destabilize the copper complex and result in a loss of fungicidal performance. Always perform a compatibility test before preparing tank mixes.

Environmental management is essential, as prolonged soil accumulation of copper may affect soil micro-biota. Prevent the drainage of product residues into water bodies to avoid toxicity to aquatic organisms.

Application during the flowering period should be avoided to protect pollinators. Adhere strictly to the pre-harvest interval (PHI) specified on the product label to ensure food safety.

Store the products in their original, tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets. Ensure the storage area is protected from freezing and extreme heat.
