Candida oleophila strain O

Description

Mode of action

Candida oleophila strain O is a biological fungicide that operates through the mechanism of competitive exclusion. This strain of yeast-like fungi rapidly colonizes the surfaces of fruits, effectively occupying ecological niches where pathogens typically establish infection.

The primary action involves the swift colonization of wounds and micro-cracks on the fruit's epidermis. By consuming nutrients necessary for pathogen spore germination, these yeast cells starve the harmful fungi, effectively preventing them from developing.

In addition to nutrient competition, the strain produces specific enzymes and antimicrobial metabolites. These substances inhibit the mycelial growth of various rot-causing fungi without causing any harm to the crop or the final consumer.

This biological agent is highly effective across a wide temperature range, allowing for its consistent use in various storage facilities, including cold storage rooms. Its biological nature makes it an excellent candidate for integrated pest management systems.

Candida oleophila strain O is non-phytotoxic and does not penetrate deep into plant tissues, remaining as a surface-level barrier. This ensures the safety of the produce while providing robust protection against post-harvest decay until the product reaches the consumer.

What it targets

The agent is primarily used to combat a wide spectrum of post-harvest pathogens that cause significant economic losses. It is specifically targeted against agents causing gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) and various species of Penicillium, which are common in fruit storage.

Application is suitable for a variety of crops, including apples, pears, citrus fruits, and stone fruits. By applying this biological control, growers can significantly reduce post-harvest waste and maintain the quality and aesthetic appeal of their produce for longer periods.

The strain also helps in suppressing the development of fruit rot pathogens like Monilinia. Timely application prevents the spread of infection from damaged or contaminated fruits to healthy ones during storage and transportation.

Using this biofungicide helps reduce reliance on synthetic chemicals, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable and organic agricultural practices. It remains effective even in the high-humidity environments often found in storage warehouses.

Rates and timing

Application rates for the product depend on the method of use: field spraying or post-harvest dipping. The concentration of the working solution should be adjusted based on the initial phytosanitary condition of the orchard and the anticipated disease pressure.

For field applications, treatments should be timed with the most favorable conditions for disease development. Ensuring uniform coverage of the fruit surface is critical to creating an effective barrier that protects against incoming spores.

In post-harvest scenarios, fruit is submerged into the suspension for a specified duration. This method is the most efficient way to protect hard-to-reach areas, such as the stem cavity or the calyx, which are highly susceptible to fungal entry.

It is recommended to apply the product during morning or evening hours to avoid intense UV radiation and extreme heat, which can negatively impact the survival of the yeast cells during the initial colonization phase.

The frequency of application depends on the expected duration of storage. For produce intended for long-term storage, follow-up applications may be required according to specific crop protocols to maintain the protective film on the fruit surface.

Restrictions

Adherence to proper storage temperature for the product concentrate is crucial for maintaining the viability of the yeast strain. Excessive heat or freezing temperatures can significantly decrease the efficacy of the biofungicide.

Mixing this biological agent with harsh synthetic fungicides is generally not recommended, as it may kill the beneficial yeast colonies. If multiple treatments are necessary, a waiting period of 5–7 days should be observed between applications.

The effectiveness of the product may be limited in environments with extremely low humidity, as Candida oleophila requires moisture to proliferate and establish its population on the fruit surface.

Water quality used for preparing the spray solution should be monitored. Extremes in pH levels can inhibit the biological activity of the yeast, so using neutral, clean water is advised to ensure the success of the treatment.

While the product is safe for the environment and human health, standard safety precautions should be followed during preparation. Using basic personal protective equipment is recommended when handling concentrated solutions to avoid any potential irritation.
