Green soap

Description

Mode of action

Green soap is a specialized agricultural product consisting of potassium salts of fatty acids derived from vegetable oils. It functions as a contact-based plant protection agent without systemic activity within the plant tissues.

The mechanism of action is physical rather than chemical or toxic. The soap solution dissolves the protective waxy layer (cuticle) on the body of the insect, leading to dehydration and blockage of the spiracles, which causes rapid suffocation.

In addition to its insecticidal properties, green soap acts as a surfactant or adjuvant. When added to a spray tank, it decreases the surface tension of the water, ensuring better coverage of the plant surface and adhesion of other tank-mixed products.

A significant advantage of this group of substances is the absence of resistance development in pests. Because the control method is physical, insects cannot evolve immunity to the treatment, making it a reliable tool for long-term seasonal use.

The substance is environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and does not leave toxic residues in the soil or produce, which makes it ideal for sustainable agriculture and organic farming practices.

What it targets

Green soap is primarily targeted at small, soft-bodied insects that feed on plant sap. It is highly effective against mobile life stages of various pests in gardens and greenhouses.

  • Aphids of all species.
  • Spider mites.
  • Scale insects and soft scales.
  • Thrips.
  • Mealybugs.

Beyond its insecticidal action, it is used for preventative control of powdery mildew. It works by altering the surface pH of the leaves and physically washing off the mycelium colonies from the plant tissue.

It is suitable for use on a wide variety of vegetables, fruit-bearing crops, and ornamental plants. It is particularly valued for treatments near harvest time due to its short pre-harvest interval.

The soap is also used for the sanitary cleaning of tree bark to remove lichens and mosses. This process eliminates hiding spots for overwintering pests, thereby improving overall garden hygiene.

Rates and timing

The typical dosage for a ready-to-use solution ranges from 200 to 400 ml of concentrate per 10 liters of water, depending on the severity of the infestation and the type of pest.

Thorough coverage is essential for success. Application must be performed with high-quality sprayers, ensuring that all plant surfaces, particularly the undersides of leaves, are completely wetted.

Repeat treatments are necessary every 5 to 7 days, 2-3 times per cycle. This schedule ensures the control of new generations hatching from eggs, which are generally unaffected by the initial soap application.

The best time for application is early morning or late evening during calm, dry weather to prevent rapid evaporation and the risk of foliage burn under direct sunlight.

While compatible with many biological products, users should perform a small-scale compatibility test before mixing green soap with other fertilizers or pesticides to avoid precipitation.

Restrictions

The main limitation is its strictly contact-based action. If the spray does not physically touch the insect, the pest will survive. Thus, equipment precision is of critical importance.

Application during active flowering should be avoided to prevent damage to sensitive flower petals and to ensure the safety of pollinating insects such as bees.

Treatments should not be carried out during high temperatures (above 25-28°C), as the risk of phytotoxicity (leaf scorch) increases significantly under these conditions.

Avoid mixing with pesticides that are unstable in alkaline environments, as the soap solution typically has an alkaline pH that could inactivate the active ingredients of other substances.

Although the substance is relatively safe, users should take standard precautions to prevent eye and skin contact. Always rinse the sprayer thoroughly with water after use to prevent nozzle clogging.
