Benfuracarb
Description
Mode of action
Benfuracarb belongs to the carbamate chemical class. It is a systemic insecticide that exhibits high biological activity against a wide range of insect pests.
The mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the insect's nervous system. This leads to disruption of nerve impulse transmission, causing paralysis and subsequent death of the pest.
The substance is capable of penetrating plant tissues through the root system and leaves, providing long-lasting internal protection.
During metabolism within the plant, benfuracarb gradually converts into more active metabolites, such as carbofuran, which prolongs the protective effect.
The preparation works effectively both through contact and ingestion of treated plant parts by pests.
What it targets
Benfuracarb is most effective against soil-dwelling pests, as well as species that damage seedlings during early stages of development.
The spectrum of controlled pests includes wireworms, false wireworms, larvae of scarab beetles, and cutworms.
It also shows activity against a number of sucking pests, such as aphids, leafhoppers, and thrips, providing protection for young seedlings.
It is used for treating crops that are sensitive to damage by soil fauna.
The product is mainly applied to protect corn, sugar beets, vegetable crops, and cereals during the seed germination period.
Rates and timing
The application rates of benfuracarb depend on the formulation: it is most commonly produced as concentrates for seed treatment or in granular forms.
When treating seeds, the product is applied in a uniform layer, ensuring maximum concentration around the future root of the plant.
Timing of application is tied to the sowing period: seeds are treated in advance or directly before sowing into the soil.
For granular forms, application into the soil rows during sowing operations is possible to create a protective zone around the seed.
The precise dosage is determined based on the predicted pest population and the biological characteristics of the specific crop.
Restrictions
Benfuracarb is a highly toxic compound, so strict adherence to safety regulations is required when handling it.
Personal protective equipment must be used, including protective clothing, respirators, and gloves, to prevent contact with skin and respiratory organs.
The substance is dangerous to bees and other beneficial entomophages, so application timing and conditions must exclude the risk of their mass mortality.
It is important to ensure that pesticide residues do not enter water bodies, as the substance poses a threat to aquatic fauna.
It is not recommended to exceed the frequency of applications or established pre-harvest intervals to avoid the accumulation of toxic residues in agricultural produce.
