Beauveria bassiana strain BOV1 is a specialized strain of entomopathogenic fungus that acts as a highly effective biological insecticide. Its core activity is the process of infection occurring upon direct contact between the fungal spore and the insect cuticle.
Upon landing on the insect's body, the fungus conidia germinate using enzymes to breach the host's outer layer. Once inside, the fungus begins to develop actively in the hemolymph, consuming nutrients and suppressing the pest's immune system.
During its life cycle, the fungus secretes specific toxins, such as beauvericins and oosporeins, which accelerate the insect's death. Paralysis and subsequent death of the pest typically occur within a few days after initial contact.
After the host dies, the fungus grows on its surface, producing a new layer of spores capable of spreading through the pest population naturally. This provides a prolonged protection effect against re-infestation of the crops.
The biological efficacy of this strain directly depends on microclimatic conditions. High humidity and moderate temperature levels are required for successful spore germination and insect infection.
What it targets
Products based on this strain are used to combat a wide spectrum of Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera pests. The fungus shows high activity against both larvae of different instars and adult individuals.
Primary targets include thrips, whiteflies, various mite species, as well as the Colorado potato beetle and wireworms. Using this strain allows for effective population control in both greenhouse and open-field conditions.
This agent is often included in integrated pest management (IPM) programs as it does not induce pest resistance. Its application is justified in organic farming and during transitions toward ecologically safe agronomic practices.
The agent effectively affects hidden pests that are difficult to reach with traditional chemical insecticides. Due to its high selectivity, the fungus is less dangerous to beneficial entomophages when application timing is chosen correctly.
Application against both adults and larvae helps to break the insect breeding cycle, which is especially important during periods of peak pest activity. The fungus retains viability in the soil, affecting soil-dwelling pests in their overwintering sites.
Rates and timing
Application rates for the product are determined by crop type, pest population density, and application method. Typically, the working solution is prepared immediately before spraying, ensuring thorough wetting of the leaf surface.
It is recommended to carry out applications during morning or evening hours when ultraviolet radiation is minimal, which protects fungal spores from premature death. Avoid working during peak midday sun.
The frequency of treatments depends on the infestation intensity and weather conditions. In conditions of high pest pressure, the interval between applications may range from 7 to 14 days to maintain the required concentration of spores on the plants.
The product is compatible with many biological agents, however, it should be used with caution in combination with certain fungicides. Chemical fungicides can inhibit fungal growth, therefore a time gap between their use is necessary.
Storage of the working solution is not permitted: the biopreparation loses activity when left in the solution for extended periods. The suspension must be thoroughly mixed before use to ensure even distribution of conidia in the spray tank.
Restrictions
A critical limitation for the efficacy of Beauveria bassiana strain BOV1 is atmospheric humidity. Under dry conditions, the fungus cannot germinate effectively on the insect's surface, which sharply reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.
Temperature range also plays an important role: extreme indicators (both low and excessively high) inhibit the development of the fungal culture. The optimal range usually lies between +18 and +28 degrees Celsius.
Protection from direct sunlight is a mandatory requirement. UV light destroys fungal spores in a short period, which is why night or evening application is a key condition for success.
The product does not possess the instant "knockdown effect" characteristic of organophosphate insecticides. Agronomists should note that pest death occurs gradually over 3 to 7 days after contact.
Avoid using strong fungicides for several days before and after applying this biopreparation. When joint applications are necessary, professional consultation regarding the compatibility of specific active ingredients is required.
