Active ingredient

Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. Kurstaki strain SA 11

Description

Mode of action

This active substance belongs to the group of biological insecticides with intestinal action. Its mechanism is based on protein crystals (endotoxins) produced by the bacteria.

Once spores and crystals are ingested by the insect, the specific alkaline environment of the gut dissolves the crystals and releases the proendotoxins.

The activated toxins bind to the receptors of the insect's gut epithelial cells, causing membrane disruption and paralysis of the digestive system.

As a result, the pest stops feeding within a few hours after ingestion, which effectively prevents further damage to the crops.

Total mortality of the pests occurs within two to five days, depending on their larval stage, physiological state, and environmental conditions.

What it targets

Preparations based on this subspecies are intended exclusively for the control of larvae of lepidopteran insects (Lepidoptera).

The spectrum of action includes a wide range of pests, such as cabbage white butterfly, cabbage loopers, various cutworms, and codling moths.

It is also effective against leafrollers, moths, webworms, and other harmful caterpillars that damage the vegetative parts of various plants.

It is applied on vegetable, fruit, berry, and ornamental crops, as well as in vineyards and forestry to suppress phytophagous populations.

Rates and timing

Application rates depend on the specific product label, the type of pest, and the level of infestation on the targeted agricultural crops.

The optimal timing for treatment is during the early larval stages, as young caterpillars are the most susceptible to the bacterial toxin.

It is recommended to spray in the evening or early morning to avoid direct sunlight, as UV radiation can reduce the viability of the bacterial spores.

The interval between repeated treatments is usually 7–10 days, allowing for the control of subsequent generations or late-hatching larvae.

Thorough coverage of the leaf surface with the spray solution is crucial to ensure that the caterpillars ingest a lethal dose of the biological agent.

Restrictions

This biological agent does not have systemic action, meaning it cannot protect new plant growth that develops after the treatment application.

The effectiveness of the product significantly decreases during periods of low air temperature, as insect metabolic activity and feeding rates decline.

The agent is generally considered harmless to beneficial insects, bees, and mammals, making it suitable for integrated pest management programs.

It is not recommended to mix it in a spray tank with strong bactericidal agents that could inhibit the activity and viability of the bacterial spores.

Products must be stored in a cool, dry place protected from direct sunlight, strictly following manufacturer instructions to maintain product efficacy.
