Bacillus subtilis strain IAB/BS03

Description

Mode of action

Hay bacillus (Bacillus subtilis) strain IAB/BS03 is a potent naturally occurring microorganism that functions as a highly effective biofungicide and bactericide. Its mechanism is based on the active synthesis of antibiotic substances that suppress the growth of phytopathogenic fungi and bacteria in the rhizosphere.

During its life cycle, the strain produces various enzymes, such as cellulases and proteases, which degrade the cell walls of pathogens. This action effectively kills spores and mycelium of disease-causing agents directly in the soil or on plant surfaces.

The product creates a protective barrier by colonizing the root system or leaf surface of the plant. Competition for nutrients and physical space with pathogens deprives fungal infections of the opportunity to spread or establish colonies.

Beyond its fungicidal role, hay bacillus acts as a plant growth stimulator. The strain produces phytohormones and vitamins that accelerate metabolic processes within plant tissues and significantly improve the uptake of mineral nutrients from the soil.

Using this strain enhances the natural immunity of the crop. Plants become more resilient to abiotic stressors, including drought and extreme temperature fluctuations, thanks to improved root system architecture and physiological vigor.

What it targets

Strain IAB/BS03 is widely used to combat a broad spectrum of fungal and bacterial diseases in agricultural crops. It is particularly effective against agents causing root rots, powdery mildew, late blight, and scab diseases.

  • Fusarium wilt in cereals and vegetables
  • Alternaria and gray mold on fruit and berry crops
  • Bacterial infections of various etiologies
  • Powdery mildew fungi on indoor and outdoor vegetables

The product demonstrates high efficiency when applied to seeds, preventing seed decay and the development of infections during the initial germination stage. This establishes a strong foundation for a healthy vegetative cycle.

Its use on vegetable crops helps to reduce pesticide residue levels, ensuring the production of environmentally friendly food. The biological agent effectively controls pathogens even under high humidity conditions in greenhouses.

The protective effect is long-lasting because the bacteria form spores that are highly resistant to adverse environmental factors. This provides continuous protection for the plant throughout its most critical growth phases.

Rates and timing

Application rates depend on the method of administration and the specific crop requirements. For seed treatment, a specific volume per ton of grain is typically used to ensure uniform coverage of the seed surface.

Foliar spraying should be conducted during morning or evening hours to avoid direct UV exposure, which can impact the viability of the hay bacillus spores. The optimal temperature for colonization ranges from +15 to +25 degrees Celsius.

Dosage requirements depend on the infection pressure and the type of crop. Repeat applications at 10–14 day intervals are recommended to maintain a sufficient concentration of the bioagent on the foliage during active growth.

The working solution must be prepared immediately before application. It is important to avoid using heavily chlorinated water, as it may decrease the viability of the beneficial bacteria of strain IAB/BS03.

Effectiveness increases when combined with organic fertilizers, which serve as a nutrient medium for the rapid growth and multiplication of hay bacillus colonies in the root zone.

Restrictions

A primary limitation is the incompatibility with chemical bactericides and harsh synthetic fungicides. Chemical plant protection treatments must be timed separately from applications of the biological agent.

Spraying during peak sunlight hours is discouraged. Intense sunlight can negatively affect the activity of the bacteria before they have successfully established themselves on the plant surfaces.

Storage of the product is limited by shelf-life, requiring adherence to the temperature regimes specified on the packaging. Exposure to high temperatures during storage leads to a decline in the titer of viable bacteria.

The product should be applied only when soil moisture levels are adequate. In extremely dry soils, microbial activity is reduced, limiting their ability to actively migrate and colonize the root zone.

Standard safety measures should be followed when handling biological fungicides. While relatively safe for humans and beneficial insects like pollinators, users should always adhere to manufacturer safety guidelines.
