Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain FZB42 is a powerful rhizobacterium widely utilized as a biological fungicide and plant growth promoter. It operates primarily by colonizing the rhizosphere, effectively creating a protective sheath around the root system that prevents pathogen entry.
This bacterium is known for producing a diverse array of lipopeptides, including surfactin, fengycin, and bacillomycin. These bioactive molecules work by disrupting the cell walls of pathogenic fungi and bacteria, directly inhibiting their growth and infection capabilities.
Beyond its direct fungicidal activity, the strain triggers induced systemic resistance (ISR) in the host plant. By stimulating the plant's natural defense pathways, the bacterium helps the crop better withstand pathogen attacks and various environmental stressors throughout its lifecycle.
The strain also contributes significantly to nutrient acquisition by solubilizing bound phosphorus in the soil. This enhancement of nutrient uptake leads to more robust root architecture and improved overall plant vigor, especially in nutrient-depleted or stressed soils.
As a rapid colonizer, FZB42 outcompetes harmful microorganisms for limited space and nutrients within the root zone. This competitive exclusion is a critical mechanism that keeps soil-borne disease populations below the economic injury threshold in managed fields.
What it targets
It is effective against a variety of soil-borne and foliar diseases, including Fusarium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, Pythium damping-off, and various Rhizoctonia diseases. It is widely used in high-value vegetable crops and greenhouse production.
Rates and timing
Application is most successful when applied during seed treatment, at transplanting as a root drench, or through irrigation systems. Foliar applications may also be used to suppress surface-level fungal pathogens during periods of high humidity.
Restrictions
The efficacy of this biological agent is dependent on sufficient soil moisture and temperature for bacterial survival. Users should avoid applying the product concurrently with strong copper-based or chemical fungicides that could negatively affect the beneficial population.
