Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain IT-45
Description
Mode of action
The active substance based on Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain IT-45 comprises a group of rhizosphere bacteria with potent fungicidal properties. Its action mechanism is based on the colonization of root surfaces and aerial plant parts, creating a protective barrier.
These bacteria synthesize lipolytic enzymes, including chitinases and proteases, which degrade the cell walls of phytopathogenic fungi. The strain also produces antibiotic compounds that interfere with the metabolism of pathogens.
A critical aspect of its function is the induction of systemic acquired resistance in the host plant. This primes the plant to respond more rapidly and effectively to future pathogen attacks.
Competition for nutrients and physical space in the rhizosphere further limits the ability of harmful microorganisms to establish themselves. The bacteria successfully outcompete pathogens for resources.
The biological activity of strain IT-45 remains stable across a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels, ensuring reliable protection in various field conditions. It is environmentally safe and leaves no harmful residues.
What it targets
This strain is used to manage a complex of fungal and bacterial diseases in various agricultural crops. Primary targets include pathogens responsible for root rots, powdery mildew, fusarium, and alternaria species.
- Root rots (Rhizoctonia, Fusarium)
- Powdery mildew on vegetables and fruits
- Late blight on potatoes and tomatoes
- Grey mold (Botrytis cinerea)
- Bacterial leaf spots
The product demonstrates high effectiveness when applied to cereal, vegetable, horticultural, and ornamental crops, both in greenhouses and open-field production systems.
Application against seedling damping-off pathogens helps significantly reduce losses during early vegetation stages. The bacteria form a biofilm around the seed or root, protecting the germinating plant.
Using strain IT-45 is an excellent strategy for organic farming, where the use of synthetic pesticides is limited. It effectively helps in lowering the overall disease pressure in the soil.
Rates and timing
Application is typically performed through foliar spraying, seed treatment, or soil application during planting. Specific dosage rates depend on the crop type and the severity of the infection pressure.
The best timing for preventive treatments is at the start of the vegetation season or upon the first signs of disease. Follow-up applications every 10–14 days are recommended to maintain bacterial populations.
Seed treatment involves soaking planting material in an aqueous solution of the product, which ensures early-stage protection against soil-borne pathogens for the young root system.
The volume of the working solution is adjusted according to the sprayer type and crop canopy density, ensuring uniform coverage of leaves or soil surfaces.
To achieve maximum biological efficacy, it is advised to avoid application during intense direct sunlight, as UV radiation can reduce the viability of the bacterial spores.
Restrictions
Mixing the bio-product with chemical bactericides that might suppress the activity of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is not permitted. Always check compatibility before tank-mixing with other pesticides.
The product is generally non-toxic to mammals, bees, and beneficial insects, but standard safety precautions should be followed, including wearing protective clothing and gloves during handling.
The prepared working solution should be used promptly, as the spores require stable conditions and are best applied fresh to ensure proper colonization of the target area.
Efficacy may be reduced in soils with extreme pH levels or through the intensive use of mineral fertilizers that negatively affect soil microbiota.
When alternating with chemical fungicides, a safety interval of 5–7 days is recommended to prevent the suppression of the beneficial bacterial population.
