Asphalts
Description
Mode of action
The group of "Asphalts" in crop protection consists of specialized organic compounds often derived from petroleum fractions, serving as contact-acting agents. These substances are characterized by their strong hydrophobic nature, allowing them to form a uniform, air-tight film upon application to plant surfaces or pests.
The primary mechanism of action is physical rather than metabolic. The applied film mechanically blocks the spiracles (breathing pores) of insects and mites, leading to their rapid death through suffocation. This physical barrier approach is particularly effective against dormant or slow-moving life stages of pests.
Asphalts are also utilized as high-performance surfactants in pesticide formulations. By increasing the viscosity and adhesion of the spray solution, they prevent active ingredients from being washed away by rain or degraded by intense sunlight, significantly extending the residual activity of the treatment.
Due to their inherent chemical stability, these compounds resist environmental degradation well. They remain active on the cuticle surface for extended periods, providing a persistent shield against external threats without requiring systemic absorption into the plant tissues.
Professional application of asphalt-based compounds requires precise emulsification to ensure consistent coverage. Inadequate mixing may lead to an irregular layer, potentially causing phytotoxic effects on sensitive plant growth stages if local concentration spikes occur.
What it targets
These substances are mainly targeted at overwintering pest stages, including scale insects, mealybugs, and mite eggs on fruit trees and woody ornamentals. They act as both primary contact agents and supporting barriers against fungal pathogens.
Rates and timing
Application rates are typically calculated as a 2% to 5% concentration of the active formulation in a water-based emulsion. The most common timing is the dormant or early spring phase before significant bud break to maximize efficiency.
Restrictions
Avoid application during peak blooming periods to protect pollinators. Do not apply under high heat stress conditions to prevent foliage burn, and ensure proper equipment cleaning due to the viscous nature of the products.
