Anilofos
Description
Mode of action
Anilofos belongs to the organophosphorus chemical class (phosphorodithioate derivative). It functions as a systemic herbicide that is primarily absorbed by the seeds, roots, and developing shoots of weeds during the germination process.
The mode of action involves the inhibition of cell division (mitosis) within the meristematic tissues of the plant. It effectively blocks the synthesis of essential lipids, which brings the development of the weed to a complete halt at the very early stages of its life cycle.
The substance exhibits strong soil activity, allowing it to form a protective chemical barrier in the top layer of the soil after application. When applied to flooded paddy fields, it is rapidly absorbed by soil colloids and the root systems of sensitive weed species.
Due to its systemic translocation within the plant, anilofos quickly interferes with weed metabolism, preventing further vegetation growth. This makes it a highly effective solution for early post-emergence weed management in water-saturated environments.
The chemical is characterized by moderate persistence in the soil, which allows it to maintain herbicidal activity for several weeks after application, thereby protecting the crop during the critical tillering stage.
What it targets
Anilofos is primarily utilized in paddy rice cultivation to manage a wide range of grass weeds. It is exceptionally effective against Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyard grass), which is a major competitor for nutrients in rice production.
In addition to barnyard grass, the herbicide suppresses the growth of certain sedge species that frequently thrive in high-moisture conditions. It also shows efficacy against some broad-leaved weeds during their initial stages of growth.
The success of the treatment is highly dependent on timely application: target weeds are most susceptible during the seed germination phase. Once weeds become established or reach later growth stages, they are significantly less sensitive to the active ingredient.
The use of anilofos significantly reduces weed density in fields, which is vital for achieving high rice yields, given that young rice seedlings have poor competitive ability against aggressive grass weeds.
It is important to assess the weed spectrum before application, as anilofos may be less effective against perennial weeds with well-developed rhizomes, necessitating tank mixtures with complementary herbicides.
Rates and timing
Application rates for anilofos vary based on soil type, weed pressure, and the specific rice cultivation method (direct seeding versus transplanting). Typically, the dosage ranges from 0.3 to 0.5 kg of active ingredient per hectare.
When applying the product in rice paddies, maintaining an optimal water level is essential. Applications should be performed in standing water or on water-saturated soil immediately after seeding or during the 1–3 leaf stage of the target weeds.
For maximum efficacy, it is recommended to maintain a steady water layer in the paddy field for 5 to 7 days following treatment. This ensures uniform herbicide distribution and prevents subsequent germination flushes.
Application timing is strictly dictated by the phenological stages of the weeds. Delaying the treatment reduces effectiveness, so agronomists strongly advise regular field scouting during the first weeks after crop emergence.
In cases where tank mixes are necessary, compatibility testing is required to prevent chemical precipitation or a decrease in the biological efficiency of the individual components.
Restrictions
Anilofos requires strict adherence to safety protocols, as it is an organophosphorus compound. Personnel must utilize personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory, skin, and eye protection, when handling the concentrate or spray solution.
The discharge of paddy water into open waterways or fishery areas is strictly prohibited until at least 7–10 days after treatment to prevent the contamination of natural ecosystems.
Spray drift must be carefully managed to avoid damage to adjacent fields containing sensitive crops. Application should be avoided when wind speeds exceed regional safety regulations.
Storage must be carried out in a dedicated, dry warehouse within the original sealed packaging. Storing the chemical near food, animal feed, or water supplies is prohibited.
- Prevent runoff and discharge into wastewater systems.
- Observe mandatory pre-harvest intervals (PHI).
- Do not apply if heavy rainfall is forecasted.
- Ensure that all spraying equipment is properly calibrated and leak-free.
