Description
Mode of action
Akanthomyces muscarius (formerly known as Lecanicillium muscarium) strain Ve6 is a naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungus utilized as a biological insecticide.
The mode of action involves the attachment of fungal spores to the insect's cuticle, followed by germination and penetration of the insect's body cavity through the secretion of chitin-degrading enzymes.
Inside the host, the fungus proliferates, consuming internal tissues and producing toxins that lead to the death of the insect within a few days of initial exposure.
Following the host's death, the fungus can sporulate on the surface of the cadaver, providing a source of secondary inoculum that spreads within the pest population.
This biological agent is highly valued in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs as it is non-toxic to vertebrates, pollinators, and beneficial insects.
What it targets
This biological agent is primarily targeted at controlling various sap-sucking pests that cause significant economic damage in both greenhouses and open fields.
The primary targets include whitefly species (such as Trialeurodes vaporariorum), which are notoriously difficult to control with traditional chemicals due to rapid resistance development.
It is also effective against various aphid species that infest vegetable and ornamental crops, helping to reduce the incidence of virus transmission.
Additionally, the fungus provides control against certain species of thrips and spider mites, which frequently plague high-value protected crops.
Ongoing research also supports its use in managing scale insects and mealybugs, contributing to a broader spectrum of pest suppression.
Rates and timing
Application rates generally range from 1 to 5 liters of formulated product per hectare, depending on the pest pressure and the specific crop canopy density.
High relative humidity (above 70%) is essential for the germination of fungal spores, and therefore irrigation or misting systems are often managed to support these conditions.
Applications should ideally start at the first sign of pest infestation to prevent population explosions, which are harder to control biologically.
Frequent intervals, typically every 7 to 14 days, are recommended during peak infestation periods to maintain a sufficient level of inoculum in the environment.
The efficacy is maximized when the spray coverage is thorough, ensuring that the spores come into direct contact with the pests on the undersides of leaves.
Restrictions
The product must not be mixed with systemic chemical fungicides, as these will likely inhibit the fungal spores and render the application ineffective.
Optimal ambient temperatures for fungal activity range between +18°C and +25°C; extreme cold or heat can significantly hinder the infection process.
The biological material is sensitive to UV radiation, so applications are best performed during late afternoon or cloudy days to protect the spores.
Storage conditions must be strictly controlled, keeping the product in a cool, dark place to maintain the viability of the fungal spores over time.
While the agent is safe for most non-target organisms, operators should follow standard safety protocols to avoid inhalation of the spray mist during the mixing process.
