How to identify

The genus Popilius belongs to the family Passalidae, part of the order Coleoptera. Unlike many other beetles, adults of this genus have a characteristic elongated, strongly flattened black body covered with longitudinal grooves.

The insect's head is equipped with powerful mandibles, and the pronotum often features specific protrusions or depressions. The size of adults varies, but they generally reach average dimensions for the family, possessing a characteristic horned appearance on the front of the head.

Popilius larvae develop inside wood; they have a C-shaped body, a whitish color, and well-developed thoracic legs. Unlike the adults (imagines), the larvae are more vulnerable and rarely leave their wood tunnels until pupation.

A distinctive feature of their biology is a complex social structure uncommon for most beetles. Adults care for the larvae by chewing wood for them and preparing a substrate for feeding, which promotes rapid growth of the young generation.

The beetles are capable of emitting specific sounds (stridulation) by rubbing their abdomen against their elytra. This behavior serves for communication within colonies, helping individuals coordinate efforts to exploit the wooden substrate.

What it damages

The primary damage from Popilius species consists of the destruction of woody debris and damage to weakened trees. They most often inhabit rotting logs, deadwood, and old stumps, but they can move to weakened fruit or forest trees.

In forest nurseries or orchards adjacent to forest areas, Popilius activity can lead to the premature destruction of sapling wood. This makes plants more vulnerable to secondary infections, fungal diseases, and other pests.

Damage to the inner tissues of the trunk disrupts normal sap flow and plant nutrition, slowing its development. In neglected cases, when the pest colony becomes numerous, the structural integrity of the wood significantly decreases.

Agricultural crops, such as fruit trees in old orchards, may suffer if there are rotting bark or wood areas, which serve as primary attractants for the beetles. The pest is not a mass aggressor but causes localized damage.

The insects' activity also contributes to the spread of xylotrophic fungi, the spores of which are carried on the bodies of the beetles and their larvae. Thus, the initial mechanical damage is complemented by the biological infection of the wood by pathogens.

When it appears

The activity of adult Popilius is observed mainly during the warm season, starting from late spring until late autumn. The beetles lead a hidden lifestyle, so their visual detection outside of wood is extremely rare.

Reproduction and egg-laying occur inside the wood, where the microclimate remains stable throughout the season. This ensures high offspring survival even during sharp changes in external temperature or humidity.

Insects overwinter as adults or larvae within the same wood tunnels, deep inside trunks or stumps. They spend the cold season in a state of diapause, continuing their development or remaining motionless until warmer temperatures return.

The emergence of new adult generations is typically synchronized with periods of optimal wood moisture. During this time, beetle migration to adjacent areas with suitable damaged trees for infestation is possible.

Agronomists should note that peak activity occurs during humid periods of the season when the wood becomes more pliable for tunnel boring. Regular inspection of woody plantations is necessary during this time.

Signs of infestation

The first sign of Popilius presence is the presence of characteristic holes in the bark or wood, which are often clogged with frass (wood dust). These holes have a round or slightly oval shape.

The presence of specific excrement near infestation sites also indicates larval activity. These look like small granules accumulating in bark cracks or at the base of the damaged trunk.

Decreased tree vitality, manifesting in premature leaf yellowing or the drying of individual branches, may be an indirect sign of internal pest damage.

When tapping the trunk of a damaged tree, a hollow or characteristic dull sound may be felt, indicating tunnels bored inside. This is a critical signal requiring immediate plant inspection.

Discovering adult beetles under the bark during pruning is direct evidence of a colony infesting the tree. In such cases, the colony is easily identified by the characteristic stridulation noise when the insects are disturbed.

Control measures

The primary control measure is maintaining good sanitary conditions in plantations. It is necessary to timely remove and destroy deadwood, stumps, and heavily damaged trees that serve as reservoirs for the pest.

Regular sanitary pruning and cleaning of wounds on trees, followed by treatment with protective antiseptic compounds, prevent beetle penetration into the wood. It is important to prevent the accumulation of rotting organic waste in the garden.

The use of biological control methods includes applying entomopathogenic fungi or bacteria capable of suppressing larval populations in natural conditions. This is an environmentally safe method for forestry and private gardens.

Chemical treatment of trunks with systemic or contact insecticides is advisable only when there is a high risk of the pest spreading to valuable crops. However, due to their hidden lifestyle, the effectiveness of these measures is limited.
