The Sophora bean weevil (Kytorhinus immixtus) is a small beetle belonging to the family Bruchidae. These insects are specialized pests that primarily target the seeds of various legume species, most notably the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica).
Adult beetles are typically 3 to 5 mm long, with an oval body shape. Their coloration ranges from brownish to gray, often characterized by a mottled appearance on the elytra that helps them camouflage against the bark of host trees.
The larvae are legless, white, and possess strong, chitinized mandibles adapted for boring into seeds. They spend their entire developmental phase inside the seed, safe from external environmental pressures.
As strong flyers, the adults can spread over considerable distances, searching for developing bean pods where they will lay their eggs. This mobility allows the pest to infest new planting areas rapidly.
The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant, ensuring that larvae always have access to a nutritious food source within the seeds.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the endosperm and embryo of the seeds. A single larva can completely consume the internal content of a seed, leaving only a thin, fragile outer shell.
This feeding activity leads to a drastic reduction in seed viability, rendering the harvested material completely useless for commercial sowing or nursery propagation.
In cases of severe infestation, the yield loss can exceed 70-80%, causing significant economic hardship for producers of medicinal herbs and ornamental plants.
The tunnels created by larvae within the seeds also serve as entry points for secondary fungal infections and bacterial decay, further deteriorating the quality of the harvested produce.
Furthermore, the contamination of seeds with frass and larval remains makes them unsuitable for use in pharmaceutical production, where purity standards are strictly regulated.
When it appears
The activity period of the Sophora bean weevil usually begins in early summer, coinciding with the development and maturation of the legume pods.
Adults emerge from hibernation and begin mating. Females then deposit eggs on the surface of young, green pods, and once hatched, the larvae immediately bore into the interior of the seed.
The duration of the life cycle depends heavily on temperature; warmer climates can support multiple generations throughout a single growing season.
Overwintering occurs primarily in the larval or pupal stages within seeds that remain on the tree or have fallen to the ground, providing a stable microclimate for the pest during winter.
The following spring, with the rise in temperatures, the adults emerge from the infested seeds to initiate a new cycle, continuing the population spread.
Signs of infestation
The most visible indicator of an infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of the legume pods or individual seeds.
When an infested seed is opened, one can observe hollowed-out cavities filled with a fine, powdery substance consisting of larval excrement and consumed seed tissues.
Infested seeds are often noticeably lighter in weight than healthy ones. They may also appear shriveled, discolored, or sunken depending on the stage of larval development.
A high rate of premature pod drop in mid-summer is another reliable sign that the interior of the pods is heavily infested with larval stages of the beetle.
In storage conditions, the presence of adult beetles or small debris at the bottom of containers is a clear indication that the seed lot is infested.
Control measures
Agricultural management starts with the timely harvest of seeds. Collecting pods as soon as they reach maturity minimizes the window of opportunity for the beetles to lay eggs.
Sanitation is critical; removing and destroying all fallen pods and plant debris beneath the host trees helps break the pest’s overwintering cycle.
Post-harvest seed treatment, such as heat treatment or fumigation in airtight containers, is highly effective at eliminating internal larvae from stored seeds.
For ornamental or public landscapes, targeted insecticide applications applied before egg-laying can protect the seed crop without requiring extensive chemical use.
Biological control, utilizing natural parasitoids that target the eggs or larvae, remains an area of interest for sustainable management in areas where chemical restrictions are in place.
