How to identify

The Brazilian bean weevil (Caryedes brasiliensis) is a beetle belonging to the family Bruchidae, known as the seed beetle family. These insects are characterized by a compact, oval body shape and a relatively small head that is tucked underneath the pronotum.

Adult beetles typically measure between 3 and 5 millimeters in length. Their coloration is generally dark brown or black, often covered with fine, dense setae or hairs, giving them a distinct textured appearance.

The antennae are typically serrate or weakly pectinate, which is a key feature for distinguishing them from other common grain pests found in stored food products.

Larvae have a C-shaped, robust, and fleshy body. They are white to creamy in color and possess a heavily sclerotized head capsule with strong mandibles designed for boring into tough seed coats.

These insects are highly specialized, often co-evolving with specific legume species that contain high concentrations of defensive amino acids like L-canavanine, which they can detoxify.

What it damages

Damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which hatch from eggs laid on the seed surface and bore directly into the interior of the legume seeds to feed on the embryo and cotyledons.

As the larvae consume the interior of the seed, they create extensive galleries, leading to significant weight loss and the complete destruction of the seed's nutritional value.

Infested seeds lose their germination potential, making them useless as planting material and drastically reducing their market quality for human or animal consumption.

Stored legume supplies can be devastated by this pest, as a single seed can harbor one or more larvae, and rapid generation cycles lead to exponential population growth in silos.

During cooler periods, the development rate significantly slows down, but the insects often remain alive, waiting for warmer conditions to resume their destructive reproductive activity.

Signs of infestation

The most prominent sign of an infestation is the presence of small, perfectly circular emergence holes on the surface of the seeds, which are formed by adults when they exit the grain.

Control measures

Effective management begins with strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the introduction of this pest into new areas through the international trade of legume seeds.

Mechanical cleaning and gravity separation are essential in the processing phase, as they can effectively remove most infested seeds before the grain is placed into long-term storage.

Fumigation with approved gases, such as phosphine, remains the gold standard for eradicating the pest within sealed silos, as it penetrates deeply into the grain mass to reach hidden larvae.

Maintaining low moisture content in the seeds (below 12-14%) is a crucial preventative strategy, as it makes the environment less suitable for both the weevil and the associated fungal pathogens.
