Description
How to identify
The pale bruchid beetle (Bruchidius gilvus) belongs to the family Bruchidae, order Coleoptera. These beetles are small, typically measuring 2–3 mm in length, and feature an oval-shaped body covered with pale yellowish or grayish pubescence.
The head is partially retracted into the pronotum, and the antennae are usually serrate. The larvae are characteristic of the family: legless, C-shaped grubs with a robust, dark-colored head, specifically adapted for boring into seeds.
What it damages
This pest primarily targets leguminous crops, with a strong preference for alfalfa seeds. The larvae develop inside the seed, consuming both the embryo and the endosperm, which makes the seed non-viable for future sowing.
Damage to the seed material results in significant economic loss, especially for seed producers. Infestation not only reduces the quantity of the harvested seeds but also drastically impairs germination rates, leading to uneven crop establishment.
When it appears
The life cycle of Bruchidius gilvus is closely tied to the flowering stage of its host plants. Overwintered adults typically emerge in late spring or early summer to coincide with the blossoming of alfalfa.
Eggs are deposited on the surface of young pods. After hatching, the larva bores through the pod wall into the seed. The entire larval development and pupation occur within the seed, after which the adult beetle emerges by chewing a circular hole through the seed coat.
Signs of infestation
During the flowering period, adults can be detected on the racemes of host plants. Early infestation is signaled by the presence of small, whitish eggs attached to the outside of the developing pods.
In stored seed lots, the most distinctive sign of damage is the presence of small circular exit holes on the seed surface. Additionally, infested samples may exhibit a reduced mass and the presence of fine powdery frass left behind by the developing larvae.
Control measures
Integrated pest management is crucial for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices, such as harvesting seed crops as early as possible before the beetles emerge, are highly effective in minimizing damage.
Chemical control involves the timely application of insecticides during the flowering stage to prevent egg-laying. Furthermore, post-harvest fumigation of seed storage facilities is necessary if an infestation is detected to protect the seed quality for the next season.
