How to identify
The chestnut borer (Nicobium castaneum) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae. It is a small beetle, typically measuring 3 to 5 millimeters in length, characterized by a brownish or chestnut coloration.
The insect is distinguished by its cylindrical body and developed elytra, which are covered with fine punctures. The head is often partially concealed by the pronotum, which is a classic morphological trait for this family of beetles.
The larvae have a whitish color, a curved body, and developed mouthparts adapted for consuming tough plant tissues. They spend almost their entire life cycle inside the wood.
Development involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are capable of flight, which facilitates their spread to new areas and the infestation of healthy tree populations.
Accurate identification often requires an inspection of the exit holes in the wood, which are circular and approximately 1-2 millimeters in diameter, distinguishing them from the burrows of other pest species.
What it damages
This pest primarily attacks deciduous trees, including chestnut, oak, and various fruit trees. It poses a significant threat to weakened or damaged trees in gardens, parks, and forests.
The larvae tunnel through the wood, destroying its internal structure. This disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, which significantly reduces the tree's vitality and overall health.
In timber yards or in structural wood applications, the chestnut borer can cause substantial damage to building materials, wooden supports, and various natural wood products.
Mass infestations lead to premature wilting of branches, loss of aesthetic value, and increased brittleness of trunks, which makes the trees dangerous during strong winds.
Damage affects both the wood and the cambial layer; in severe cases, extensive tunneling can lead to the total death of the tree.
When it appears
Activity of adult Nicobium castaneum usually begins during the warmer months, typically in late spring or early summer, when temperatures allow the beetles to emerge en masse from their pupation sites.
During this period, mating occurs, and females lay eggs in bark cracks or on damaged wood surfaces. Optimal conditions for larval development include moderate humidity and the absence of extreme temperature fluctuations.
The life cycle of one generation can last from one to several years, depending on regional climatic conditions and the quality of the wood (the host material).
Hibernation usually occurs at the larval stage within the woody tissues, where they are well-protected from harsh weather conditions. Larvae may continue feeding even at relatively low temperatures.
The peak of visual activity for adult beetles occurs in the evening, when they emerge from their burrows to find mates and new locations to lay eggs.
Signs of infestation
The most visible sign of infestation is the appearance of small piles of "frass" — a fine wood dust that falls from holes in the trunks or branches of the affected tree.
Small circular holes, often referred to as exit holes, can be spotted on the bark surface, indicating where adult beetles have emerged after completing their metamorphosis.
Tapping the infested areas of the trunk may reveal hollow spaces or a dull sound, indicating significant internal wood destruction caused by the feeding larvae.
Leaves on infested branches may yellow, wilt, or drop prematurely due to the disruption of the tree's vascular system. Such branches become brittle and break easily under pressure.
Removing the outer bark layer reveals complex, winding tunnels packed with compressed larval excrement, which is a clear indicator of active pest presence.
Control measures
The foundation of control is sanitary pruning and the timely removal of infested tree parts. All infected branches and trunks must be destroyed by burning to prevent the spread of the beetles.
Maintaining tree health through proper watering, fertilization, and protection from sunscald is essential, as borers primarily target trees that are already stressed or weakened.
Systemic insecticide treatments are effective during the adult flight period. Spraying trunks can help eliminate beetles before they have a chance to lay eggs in bark crevices.

- Application of repellents based on natural oils or biological agents.
- Encouraging natural predators, such as parasitic wasps, to control populations.
