The Coffee berry borer, scientifically known as Stephanoderes uniseriatus (often associated with the genus Hypothenemus), is a highly specialized beetle from the family Curculionidae. It is a major pest that exclusively targets coffee fruit to complete its life cycle.

Adult beetles are very small, measuring approximately 1.5–2 mm in length, with a cylindrical, dark-colored body. Their size allows them to bore deep into the endosperm of the coffee bean, making them difficult to detect without careful inspection.

The biology of this pest is intrinsically linked to the fruiting phenology of the coffee plant. The female borer enters the berry, creates galleries, and lays eggs inside, ensuring a protected environment for the developing larvae.

This beetle is capable of rapid reproduction in tropical climates, often completing multiple generations within a single coffee growing season. This leads to exponential population growth if left unmanaged.

Effective identification involves using specialized lure traps that utilize attractants like ethanol or methanol, which help farmers monitor beetle density and timing of emergence across the plantation.

What it damages

The primary damage caused by Stephanoderes uniseriatus is the direct destruction of the coffee bean endosperm. By feeding on the bean, the larvae and adults destroy the weight and quality of the product.

While their primary host is the coffee plant, they can impact any coffee variety grown in the region. The destruction of the bean core makes the coffee unusable for premium processing or export.

The economic impact is significant; heavy infestations can lead to substantial yield losses, sometimes exceeding 50% of the total harvest if no intervention is performed.

Secondary damage occurs when the boreholes created by the beetle serve as entry points for pathogens. These pathogens cause fruit rotting and degradation, which can spread to healthy beans in the same cluster.

Reduced market value of the harvest is a major consequence, as international standards strictly prohibit high levels of insect-damaged beans in export lots.

Signs of infestation

The most reliable sign of an infestation is the presence of small, perfectly round entry holes, typically located at the apex of the coffee berry near the disc.

Cutting into a suspect berry often reveals a complex network of internal galleries filled with fine, brown frass (waste material). In advanced cases, the bean is completely hollowed out.

Infested berries often show signs of premature ripening or yellowing. Some may dry out and shrivel while still on the branch, losing their commercial viability.

During the drying phase of post-harvest processing, damaged beans are easier to spot as they are often deformed, lightweight, and show the characteristic exit or entry holes.

An unusual, musty odor coming from the berries is a strong indicator of an internal infestation, as the feeding activity and subsequent decay process create an environment for mold growth.

Control measures

Sanitation is the cornerstone of control. Farmers must strictly implement harvest practices that ensure all ripe and "raisin" (over-ripe/dried) berries are removed from the tree and the ground at the end of the season.

Cultural control measures include regular pruning to open up the canopy. Proper airflow and light penetration significantly reduce the humidity levels that the beetles prefer for reproduction.

Biological control options involve the use of entomopathogenic fungi, specifically Beauveria bassiana. This fungus naturally targets the beetles and can be highly effective in high-humidity coffee growing environments.

Chemical control should be used as a last resort, relying on integrated pest management (IPM) principles to apply insecticides only when population thresholds justify the intervention.

Continuous monitoring through traps and regular field scouting allows for targeted interventions, minimizing the need for broad-spectrum chemical sprays and preserving the ecological health of the coffee plantation.
