How to identify

The rose chafer (Cetonia aurata) is a beetle of the Scarabaeidae family, famous for its brilliant metallic green coloration. Adult beetles typically measure between 14 and 20 millimeters in length.

The upper side of the beetle often displays distinct white spots or irregular lines on its wing covers, which serve as a key identification feature. Its underside frequently has a coppery or reddish-gold sheen.

Larvae of the rose chafer are large, C-shaped grubs with a white body and a brown head. They are often found in decaying organic matter, compost piles, or rotting wood, acting as decomposers rather than root pests.

These beetles are powerful fliers and are highly active on sunny, warm days. They move swiftly between flowers and trees, making them a noticeable presence in gardens throughout the late spring and summer months.

The life cycle of the rose chafer usually lasts one to two years. It consists of the egg stage, three larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult phase, with development being highly temperature-dependent.

What it damages

Adult rose chafers are known for their habit of feeding on the floral parts of plants. They primarily consume petals, stamens, and pistils, causing damage that prevents successful pollination.

Fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries, and plums are frequently attacked. When beetles destroy the flowers, the tree fails to develop fruit, leading to significant yield losses for the gardener.

Ornamental plants are also vulnerable. Roses, peonies, and other large-flowered garden plants often suffer from damaged petals, which ruins their visual appeal and longevity in the landscape.

While the larvae are generally considered beneficial as they break down organic materials, their presence in large numbers can occasionally become a nuisance in greenhouses or managed soil environments.

The intensity of the damage increases during hot, dry summers when the beetles are most active. Under such conditions, they can decimate a large number of blossoms in a very short period.

When it appears

Rose chafers begin their adult life in late spring, usually coinciding with the blooming period of various stone fruits. Peak activity is generally observed from June through July.

During the warmer months, adults are most visible on sunny days. As the season progresses into late summer, the population gradually declines as the individuals complete their life cycles.

The larvae remain in the soil or decaying wood throughout the year. They are hardy and can withstand winter temperatures by digging deeper into the substrate to avoid freezing.

Pupation occurs in specialized cocoons made of soil particles and secretions. This process typically takes place in the spring, triggered by the warming of the ground.

The emergence of adults is strictly synchronized with the flowering phenology of their preferred host plants, ensuring that they have immediate access to a food source upon waking from their dormancy.

Signs of infestation

The most obvious sign of an infestation is the presence of metallic, emerald-green beetles sitting in the center of flower blossoms. They often remain quite still when approached.

Ragged, chewed petals and missing floral organs are clear indicators of feeding damage. If you inspect a flower, you will likely find the stamen and pistil parts partially or fully consumed.

A reduction in fruit set on trees, even when weather conditions were otherwise favorable for pollination, can be a sign that rose chafers have destroyed the delicate floral structures.

The accumulation of large, C-shaped grubs in a compost heap is an indicator that the area is a preferred breeding site for the beetles.

Light-colored flowers are particularly attractive to these beetles. Examining white or pale pink roses and fruit blossoms in the morning is a highly effective way to detect their presence early.

Control measures

Manual collection remains the most effective and eco-friendly method for managing rose chafers. Shaking them off the branches onto a cloth in the early morning, when they are sluggish, is highly recommended.

Avoid heavy use of chemical pesticides, especially during flowering, as these chemicals can harm essential pollinators like honeybees and bumblebees, causing more harm than the beetles themselves.

Proper garden sanitation is crucial. Removing old, rotting wood and turning compost piles regularly helps destroy larval habitats and limits the next generation's population.

In cases of severe infestation, biological controls such as specialized nematodes or fungi that target soil-dwelling larvae can be applied to reduce the number of grubs developing in the garden.

  • Inspect flowers regularly during the blooming season.
  • Use manual shaking to remove beetles in the early morning.
  • Clear away decaying wood and garden debris.
  • Encourage natural predators like birds to frequent the garden.
