Its appearance is characterized by a stocky frame and strong incisors adapted for digging soil and feeding on tough vegetation. The muzzle is blunt, and the ears are small and pressed close to the head, serving as an adaptation to a burrowing lifestyle.
The biology of the species is closely linked to moist habitats, particularly rice paddies and irrigated fields. These rodents are primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours inside deep and complex burrow systems.
The life cycle of the lesser bandicoot rat is marked by rapid reproduction when food is abundant. Females can produce multiple litters per year, which, under favorable conditions, leads to sharp population surges in agricultural lands.

During the maturation phase, areas with "mown" vegetation become visually apparent as crop density drops sharply. Such patches expand over time if no measures are taken to control the pest population.
Rodent activity is accompanied by specific rustling and squeaking at night. When checking fields with a flashlight during the dark, one can often spot the animals moving along boundaries and through crops.
