How to identify
The spruce borer (Ernobius explanatus) is a beetle belonging to the family Anobiidae, within the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are small, typically ranging from 3 to 5 mm in length, with an elongated and slightly convex body.
The body is covered in fine, short hairs, providing a dull brownish color that helps the insect blend in with the bark of host trees. The head is partially retracted under the pronotum, a hallmark feature of the family.
The larvae are whitish, C-shaped, and equipped with a robust chewing mouthpart designed to bore through bark and wood fibers. They go through a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.
Adult beetles are most active during warm months, which is when they seek out suitable host trees to lay their eggs. Their size and cryptic behavior make them difficult to spot without close inspection.
Field identification is often based on the observation of exit holes and the specific tree species affected, supplemented by entomological trapping for accurate monitoring.
What it damages
This pest primarily attacks coniferous trees, with Norway spruce (Picea abies) being the main host. It is often found in trees that are stressed, weakened by environmental factors, or recently felled.
Larvae feed within the inner bark and outer sapwood, creating winding tunnels. This feeding activity disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, eventually causing branches or the entire tree to wither and die.
In forest management, the spruce borer causes significant damage by degrading the quality of the wood, making it unsuitable for commercial use and reducing its overall value.
Trees damaged by this borer become highly susceptible to secondary attacks by other pathogens and wood-boring insects, further exacerbating the decline of the forest stand.

Signs of infestation

The foliage may show signs of yellowing or premature shedding as the tree's health declines due to the interruption of nutrient transport by the larval galleries.
In some cases, the bark may show localized drying or cracking, which often reveals the feeding galleries created by the larvae inside the tree.
During the peak activity season, adult beetles can sometimes be observed crawling on the sunny sides of tree trunks during the afternoon hours.
Control measures
Effective management requires prompt removal and sanitation of infested trees to eliminate breeding sites and prevent the spread of the population to healthy individuals.
Regular forest pathology monitoring is crucial for the early detection of infestation hot spots, allowing for quick response measures to contain the pest.
Pheromone traps are highly recommended for monitoring adult beetle activity and can also be used as a tool to reduce population densities in high-risk areas.
Chemical treatments, involving the application of insecticides to the trunk, may be used as a last resort in decorative or nursery environments to prevent adult beetles from laying eggs.
