The sugarcane mealybug (Pseudococcus saccharicola) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Pseudococcidae family. The adult females have a soft, oval-shaped body covered with a characteristic white, waxy secretion that protects them from external hazards.
The biological cycle of this pest involves egg, larval, and adult stages. Females are largely sedentary, while the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly active and are the primary agents of infestation spread across plantations.
The white, cotton-like masses found on the stems and in leaf sheaths are the most prominent feature of this species. These secretions protect the eggs and young nymphs from predators and environmental stress.
Males are winged and short-lived, serving only to mate, while females remain on the host plant throughout their life cycle, continuously sucking sap and expanding the colony size.
Accurate identification requires careful inspection of the leaf axils and the stem base, as these hidden areas provide the optimal microclimate for the mealybug to thrive and multiply.
What it damages
This species primarily targets sugarcane crops, feeding by inserting its mouthparts into the plant tissue to extract sap. This continuous drainage of nutrients leads to systemic stress in the plant.
As they feed, mealybugs inject toxic saliva into the sugarcane, which can cause significant stunted growth, deformation of internodes, and a reduction in the overall vigor of the plant.
