The maritime mealybug (Pseudococcus neomaritimus) is a small insect belonging to the family Pseudococcidae. It is easily recognized by the white, waxy, mealy-like secretion that covers its oval-shaped body.
Adult females typically reach 3-4 mm in length. They possess lateral filaments around the body margin, which are a key diagnostic feature compared to other closely related species.
Males are rarely observed, as they are short-lived, winged, and do not feed. The population is primarily sustained through the reproduction of females.
The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside white, cottony ovisacs, which provide protection against environmental stress and pesticides.
Scientific identification often requires careful examination of the insect's microscopic morphological characters, such as the arrangement of cerarii and ducts on the dorsal surface.
What it damages
This pest is a polyphagous insect capable of feeding on a wide range of horticultural, greenhouse, and ornamental crops. It primarily targets succulent plant tissues.
Host plants commonly include various citrus species, grapevines, ferns, and numerous indoor decorative plants. They prefer to feed on young stems, leaf axils, and veins on the underside of leaves.
By extracting plant sap, the mealybug causes nutrient depletion, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and in severe cases, the death of the host plant.
A significant indirect impact of the feeding is the excretion of honeydew. This sticky substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, which interferes with photosynthesis.
In greenhouses, maritime mealybug outbreaks can spread rapidly if left unchecked, potentially causing significant economic losses for commercial growers.
Signs of infestation
The most distinctive symptom is the presence of white, woolly masses on the plant, often found tucked into protected spots like leaf junctions or stem crotches.
A sticky residue on the foliage or surfaces beneath the plant is a clear indicator that mealybugs are present and actively feeding.
The development of a black, powdery-looking coating (sooty mold) on the leaves often indicates that a mealybug infestation has been present for some time.
Plant distress, characterized by yellowing leaves, unexpected leaf drop, and distorted new growth, frequently indicates high population density.
Close inspection often reveals the adult insects themselves, which are usually slow-moving and tend to aggregate in small, protected colonies.

For minor infestations, mechanical removal using a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol can be effective, as it dissolves the protective waxy covering of the pest.
Systemic insecticides are generally the preferred method for larger infestations, as they are absorbed by the plant and provide long-lasting control.
Biological control agents, such as the predatory beetle Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, can be successfully used in greenhouse environments to manage population numbers.
