The hyacinth mealybug (Pseudococcus hyacinthi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. These small insects are characterized by a waxy, white, mealy appearance that covers their bodies.
Adult females are wingless and oval-shaped, moving very little once they find a suitable feeding site. In contrast, males are winged but short-lived, serving only to fertilize the females.
The female produces eggs within a protective white, waxy sac, which shields the offspring from environmental stressors and physical disturbances.
The first instar larvae, often called "crawlers," are highly active and represent the primary stage responsible for the dispersion of the population to new plant tissues.
