How to identify

The citrus mealybug (Pseudococcus aurantiacus) is a member of the Pseudococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. Adult females have an oval, soft body ranging from 3 to 5 mm, covered in a white, powdery waxy secretion that protects them from environmental stressors.

Reproduction is sexual, with females depositing their eggs into cottony ovisacs. The first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile and disperse across the host plant to find suitable feeding sites on leaves, stems, and fruits.

The life cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature, with optimal development occurring between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius. In greenhouse environments or tropical climates, this pest can produce multiple overlapping generations throughout the year.

Mealybugs are easily recognized by the white, fluffy, cotton-like masses they form in leaf axils, near vein junctions, and on fruit stems. This waxy coating also makes them resistant to many contact pesticides, posing a challenge for effective eradication.

Overwintering usually occurs as nymphs or adults in bark crevices, root zones, or soil debris. As spring temperatures rise, these overwintering populations become active and begin migrating to young, succulent growth.

What it damages

The citrus mealybug primarily attacks various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. However, it is also known to infest a wide variety of ornamental plants, greenhouse crops, and fruit-bearing trees like figs and grapes.

These insects feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissues and extracting nutrient-rich sap. Persistent feeding results in stunted growth, chlorosis, leaf drop, and the distortion of developing buds and flowers.

A major indirect threat is the excretion of honeydew, a sugary byproduct that serves as a medium for the growth of sooty mold. This dark, fungal growth covers leaves, interfering with photosynthesis and reducing the overall vigor of the plant.

On fruit crops, mealybugs often cluster beneath sepals or in skin crevices, making the fruit unmarketable and susceptible to rot during storage and transit. This reduces the economic value of the harvest significantly.

In addition to physical damage, mealybug infestations can weaken host plants, making them more susceptible to drought, nutritional deficiencies, and secondary infections by various plant pathogens.

Control measures

The first line of defense is rigorous quarantine and inspection of new plant stock to prevent introduction. Regularly monitoring for the presence of cottony masses or honeydew is crucial for early intervention.

Biological control is highly effective, especially in greenhouses, by releasing natural enemies such as the predator beetle Cryptolaemus montrouzieri. These beneficial insects can significantly reduce mealybug populations without chemical inputs.

Chemical control should rely on systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant and translocated to the areas where mealybugs feed. Treatments should be repeated at 7–10 day intervals to target consecutive generations as they emerge.

Mechanical methods, such as wiping infested areas with alcohol-soaked swabs or using high-pressure water sprays, can be used for small-scale infestations in indoor or home garden settings.

Proper horticultural practices, including pruning to improve air circulation and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization, are vital. Healthy, well-managed plants are generally more resilient to mealybug attacks and recover faster from minor infestations.
