Description

How to identify

The vine mealybug (Planococcus ficus) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Pseudococcidae. Adult females are oval, 3–4 mm long, and covered with a white, waxy mealy substance.

Males are much smaller, have one pair of wings, and do not feed; they exist solely for mating purposes, making them rarely seen in the vineyard environment.

The nymphs, known as crawlers, are the most active and dispersive stage. They are yellow-orange and move quickly to find suitable feeding sites on the vine.

The species undergoes incomplete metamorphosis and can produce multiple generations per year, depending on the climatic conditions of the region.

They overwinter as adults or older nymphs, hiding in bark crevices, pruning wounds, or deep within the roots and rootstocks of the vine.

What it damages

This pest primarily attacks grapevines but can also infest fig trees, citrus, and various ornamental plants, causing significant physiological stress.

By feeding on the sap, Planococcus ficus weakens the vine, reduces berry size, and leads to poor sugar accumulation in the grapes.

The most severe impact is the transmission of grape leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaV), which are devastating to vineyard health and longevity.

Excreting honeydew encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks photosynthesis and ruins the aesthetic quality of the harvested produce.

Heavy infestations can cause premature leaf drop, stunted vine growth, and even the death of young vines under high pressure.

When it appears

Activity begins in the spring when temperatures rise, usually corresponding with the bud-break phase of the grapevine's annual cycle.

Population levels generally peak during the hot summer months, when generations overlap and rapid reproduction occurs across all parts of the vine.

Throughout the season, one can observe various stages of the insect simultaneously, as the generations are not synchronized in warm climates.

In autumn, as days shorten and temperatures drop, the population begins to migrate to protected overwintering sites on the vine.

Monitoring should be conducted consistently throughout the growing season, with special attention paid to the trunk and underside of leaves.

Signs of infestation

The presence of white, cotton-like masses, especially in pruning scars and leaf axils, is the primary visual indicator of an infestation.

Sticky honeydew covering leaves, stems, and berries is a major sign, often attracting ants that protect the mealybug colonies from natural predators.

Sooty mold growth, appearing as a black coating on leaves or clusters, confirms that the mealybug population has been feeding for some time.

Leaf yellowing, curling, or overall vine lack of vigor may indicate a severe infestation affecting the plant's vascular system.

Biological control programs, using parasitoid wasps or predators like the mealybug destroyer beetle, are highly effective in sustainable vineyards.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including pheromone trapping for monitoring, are essential for keeping populations below economic thresholds.
