The mealybug Phenacoccus minimus belongs to the family Pseudococcidae, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are known for their distinct white, waxy secretion that covers their bodies and serves as a primary protective barrier against environmental stress.

Adult females are generally sessile, oval-shaped, and coated in a powdery white substance. Due to their minute size, they are often overlooked during the initial stages of plant infestation.

In contrast, males are equipped with wings and are capable of active flight to locate mates. The reproductive cycle involves the deposition of eggs into protective wax-like sacs, known as ovisacs, which can contain a large number of offspring.

The life cycle includes a mobile larval stage called crawlers. These crawlers are the primary dispersal phase, allowing the pest to spread across the plant canopy or be carried by wind currents to neighboring plants.

Affected plants often display signs of decline, such as yellowing leaves, loss of turgor, and a general lack of vigor. In severe cases, the foliage may curl or become malformed.

Close inspection of the bark and junctions between branches will reveal the actual insects: tiny, sluggish, white-bodied creatures that remain firmly attached to the plant tissues, often tucked away in protected spots.
