Phenacoccus franseriae belongs to the family Pseudococcidae, order Hemiptera. It is a small insect that, in its adult stage, is covered with a characteristic white waxy coating.
Females of this species have an oval body shape, soft integuments, and developed legs that allow them to move on the host plant. They are often surrounded by a white, powdery mass that protects them from external influences.
Identification of this species requires microscopic examination of chitinous structures, as it is externally similar to other members of the Phenacoccus genus. Determination is based on the number and arrangement of wax glands.
First-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile and are responsible for the dispersal of the pest. They lack a waxy coating and are the most vulnerable stage to contact insecticides.
The biology of the species is closely linked to dry conditions for host plants. The optimal temperature for rapid development is 22–28 degrees Celsius with low air humidity.
What it damages

The damage also involves the potential transmission of phytopathogenic viruses while feeding on different plant species, making this mealybug a serious threat to phytosanitary health.
Signs of infestation
The first visual sign of the pest's presence is the appearance of white, cottony, or flake-like masses in leaf axils and on the underside of leaves.
The presence of a sticky substance on leaves and stems indicates active feeding by the mealybug colony. This substance quickly becomes covered with a black sooty mold growth.
Infested plants may begin to drop flower buds or fruit sets, which is often mistaken for a nutrient deficiency. It is important to watch for the presence of ants, which feed on the honeydew produced by the mealybug.
When inspecting the root collar or lower parts of the stem, one can observe clusters of adult females. They often hide in bark cracks, making them difficult to detect at early stages.
In cases of mass reproduction, a characteristic "flour-like" residue of wax can be observed around the infested plant or on the soil surface of potted plants.
Control measures
Control of this species includes a comprehensive approach, starting with regular monitoring of plant health. If early infestations are discovered, manual removal of the affected plant parts is recommended.
The chemical control method involves the use of systemic insecticides that can penetrate the plant's sap. Applications should be performed at 7–10 day intervals to eliminate emerging generations.
Products based on neonicotinoids and organophosphate compounds show good efficacy. It is crucial to thoroughly spray the underside of leaves where pest colonies reside.
In greenhouse environments, the use of entomophagous insects, such as the predatory beetle Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, is effective. They can naturally suppress the mealybug population.
Prevention includes adhering to quarantine measures when introducing new plants and regular disinfection of tools. Maintaining optimal humidity and cleanliness in the greenhouse also reduces the risk of population outbreaks.
