The tea mealybug (Paraputo theaecola) is a member of the Pseudococcidae family within the Hemiptera order. These small insects are well-known for their white, waxy coating, which gives them a flour-like appearance.

Adult females are wingless, oval-shaped, and relatively sedentary, usually found in clusters on stems or leaf axils. Males are rarely seen, smaller in size, and possess wings for mating purposes.

The life cycle involves egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. The crawlers represent the most mobile stage, capable of dispersing throughout the plant canopy or being transported by wind to neighboring tea bushes.

Taxonomic identification of this species is complex and relies on specific morphological structures, including the distribution of tubular ducts and setae on the body, which require laboratory analysis.

These insects thrive in warm and humid environments, often forming dense colonies that are protected by their waxy secretions from environmental stress and many contact insecticides.

What it damages

As the primary host, tea plants suffer significantly from mealybug infestation. The insects feed by sucking phloem sap from young shoots, buds, and leaves, leading to severe physiological stress.

Continuous feeding causes leaf chlorosis, curling, and stunted shoot development. In severe cases, the plant may lose buds and young leaves entirely, significantly reducing production yield.

The production of honeydew is a secondary but equally damaging symptom. This sweet excretion promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and blocks sunlight, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis.

Infested plants become weakened and susceptible to secondary pathogens, including viral infections and other fungal diseases, which take advantage of the tissue damage caused by the feeding insects.

In nursery settings, the damage can be catastrophic, causing the death of young seedlings and affecting the overall quality and uniformity of the tea plantation stock.

Signs of infestation

The most distinctive sign of infestation is the appearance of white, cotton-like masses found in leaf axils or on tender stem parts. These masses contain egg clutches and protected nymphs.

Leaves often appear shiny or sticky due to the presence of honeydew. This sticky substance is a clear indicator that the plant is infested with sucking insects and requires immediate inspection.

The presence of sooty mold, appearing as a black or dark grey soot-like powder on the foliage, confirms the long-term presence of mealybugs and the honeydew they produce.

The presence of ants is a strong indicator of an active colony. Ants are attracted by the honeydew and will actively protect mealybugs from predators and parasitoids.

Reduced vigor of the tea bushes, yellowing of the terminal leaves, and a general lack of new shoot production are classic symptoms of heavy mealybug pressure.

Control measures

Effective management begins with strict field hygiene, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts to reduce the inoculum load within the plantation.

Biological control using natural enemies, such as ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae) and parasitic wasps, is a sustainable approach to keeping mealybug populations below economic damage thresholds.

Systemic insecticides are the preferred chemical control method, as they are absorbed by the plant and ingested by the insects during feeding, circumventing the protective waxy layer.

Monitoring the plantation during the peak crawler stage is crucial for timing applications correctly. Applications must be systematic to ensure full coverage and prevent the development of pesticide resistance.

Cultural practices, such as maintaining appropriate plant spacing and irrigation management, can improve plant health and resistance, making the bushes less attractive to infestation.
