How to identify
Mealybugs of the genus Paraputo belong to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. These insects are easily recognized by the waxy, mealy-like secretion that covers their bodies, providing protection against environmental stress.
Adult females typically possess an oval-shaped body and are shielded by white, cottony wax filaments. Depending on the specific species, their size generally ranges from 3 to 5 millimeters, making them small but highly visible on infested surfaces.
Males of the Paraputo genus are rarely observed; they are winged and mobile, dedicated solely to reproduction, whereas the damage is almost exclusively caused by the sedentary females and their nymphs.
A key biological feature of Paraputo is their symbiotic relationship with ants. The ants protect these mealybugs from predators and parasites in exchange for the sugary honeydew they secrete, facilitating the spread of the pest.
The life cycle encompasses the egg stage, several nymphal instars, and adulthood. In greenhouse environments or tropical climates, these insects can breed continuously, leading to rapid population explosions.
What it damages
These pests are polyphagous and affect a wide range of agricultural, ornamental, and tropical crops. They prefer to inhabit sheltered areas such as leaf axils, bark crevices, flower buds, and even the rhizosphere of the host plant.
Commonly attacked hosts include citrus varieties, tropical ornamental plants, and various greenhouse crops. Both aerial plant parts and root zones can be heavily infested by the Paraputo genus.

In cases of severe infestation, the cumulative effect of sap loss and fungal growth can lead to leaf yellowing, massive leaf drop, stunted development, and occasionally the death of the entire plant.
Signs of infestation
The primary visual indicator of an infestation is the presence of white, cotton-like masses found in sheltered areas, particularly at the points where leaves meet the stems or along the leaf veins.
Sticky, shiny residue on leaves is a hallmark sign of honeydew production. If this residue becomes colonized by black sooty mold, it indicates that the colony has been established for some time.
Plants exhibiting symptoms of Paraputo presence often show distorted growth, yellowing leaves, and a general lack of vigor. These signs appear as the plant loses its vitality due to persistent feeding.
Increased ant activity around a plant is often a reliable indicator of mealybug presence, as ants actively farm these insects for the honeydew they provide.
Upon closer inspection, particularly of the root system or the base of the stem, one may find colonies protected by wax deposits, even if the foliage appears relatively clean.
Control measures
Mechanical control, such as wiping affected areas with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol or mild soapy water, is highly effective for localized infestations on small plants.
Systemic insecticides, particularly those containing neonicotinoids like imidacloprid or acetamiprid, are often required for more severe infestations, as they are absorbed by the plant and kill the pests during feeding.
Biological control involves the introduction of natural predators, such as the mealybug destroyer Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, which is highly efficient at regulating mealybug populations in greenhouse settings.
Managing the ant population is essential for successful eradication, as ants protect the mealybugs from their natural enemies. Using physical barriers or ant-bait stations can help mitigate the spread.
Preventive measures such as strict quarantine of new plant material, regular scouting of the collection, and maintaining optimal humidity levels help minimize the risk of a Paraputo outbreak.
