Nesticoccus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae, commonly known as mealybugs. These are small, sap-sucking insects often recognized by their protective, waxy, cottony secretions that cover their bodies.

Adult females are typically oval-shaped, soft-bodied, and covered in a white or creamy, mealy wax layer. Males are rarely seen; they are winged, do not feed in the adult stage, and their existence is solely for reproduction.

The first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile. This stage is crucial for the dispersal of the pest across the host plant and facilitates its spread to adjacent plants in nurseries or greenhouses.

Taxonomically, this genus is part of a complex group of scale insects that thrive by extracting phloem sap. Accurate identification of the specific species usually requires microscopic examination of morphological characteristics.

What it damages

Distorted shoot tips and curled leaves are clear signs of significant damage. Growth slows down, internodes may shorten, and the plant takes on a stunted, sickly appearance that contrasts with healthy growth.

The appearance of sooty mold, which looks like a black, powdery dusting, secondary to the honeydew, indicates a persistent infestation. This significantly lowers the aesthetic and commercial value of ornamental plants.

Upon close inspection, the insects themselves can often be seen clustered in secluded areas of the plant. During mass outbreaks, the small, moving nymphs can be observed crawling across leaves and stems.

Control measures

Strict phytosanitary protocols for all new plant material entering a site are the first line of defense. Preventing the introduction of infested stock is critical to maintaining a clean environment.

Mechanical control, such as pruning and destroying heavily infested branches, is effective during the early stages of an outbreak. This reduces the source of the infestation significantly.
