Mealybugs of the genus Exallomochlus belong to the family Pseudococcidae, which is part of the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by the white, waxy, powdery secretion that covers their bodies, providing protection against environmental stress.

Adult females are typically sedentary and lay their eggs in protective ovisacs made of white waxy filaments. The first-instar nymphs, commonly called crawlers, are the most active stage, capable of moving across the plant or dispersing via wind currents.

Precise identification of the Exallomochlus genus often requires microscopic examination of morphological features, such as the arrangement of pores and specific setae. In field conditions, they are frequently confused with other mealybug species, so careful observation of their habitat is essential.

The life cycle includes eggs, nymphal stages, and adults. In warm tropical or greenhouse climates, breeding occurs continuously throughout the year, allowing populations to reach damaging levels very rapidly under favorable conditions.

Furthermore, Exallomochlus species are known to act as vectors for various plant viruses. This indirect damage often exceeds the harm caused by direct sap extraction, leading to systemic infections that can destroy entire crops or collections.

Signs of infestation

The most visible indicator of an infestation is the presence of white, cotton-like masses on the stems or undersides of leaves. These are the protective waxy covers for egg clusters, indicating that a breeding population is established.

Physical removal using cotton swabs dipped in alcohol is an effective supplementary measure for small or early infestations. While this clears visible insects, it does not address hidden eggs, so it must be combined with systemic treatments.
