Ehrhornia is a genus of insects belonging to the family Pseudococcidae, commonly known as mealybugs. These insects are small, sap-sucking pests that often infest various woody plants, causing significant damage to the host.
Adult females are often protected by a waxy, cotton-like substance that they secrete. This covering acts as a barrier, making them highly resistant to many standard contact insecticides and environmental stress.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval stages (often called crawlers), and the adult stage. The crawler stage is the most mobile phase, allowing the insects to disperse across the tree canopy or move to adjacent plants.
These pests possess specialized mouthparts designed to pierce plant tissues and extract nutrients from the phloem. Their feeding habits can weaken the tree, leading to stunted growth and loss of vigor.
Identification of the genus Ehrhornia often requires microscopic examination. Experts look for specific morphological characteristics, such as the arrangement of wax-secreting pores and the structure of the insect's body segments.
What it damages
The primary hosts for Ehrhornia are various tree species and shrubs. They often cluster in protected areas such as bark crevices, branch unions, and the base of leaf stalks, making them difficult to detect.

Distorted or stunted shoot growth is another frequent symptom. When the insects feed on young, developing tissues, it disrupts the plant's hormonal balance and leads to physical deformities in the new growth.
Ant activity on tree trunks can also signal a scale infestation. Ants are attracted to the honeydew produced by the scales and will often protect the pests from predators, making the problem harder to manage.
Control measures
Effective management of Ehrhornia requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Early detection is crucial, as populations can grow exponentially under favorable environmental conditions.
Systemic insecticides are generally the most effective control measure. These chemicals are absorbed by the plant and translocated throughout the tree, affecting the insects regardless of where they are hiding.
Application timing should be aligned with the crawler stage, as this is when the insects are most vulnerable. Monitoring tools, such as double-sided sticky tape or pheromone traps, can help track the timing of crawler emergence.
Horticultural oils can be used to smother the insects, provided the application is thorough and covers all infested areas. This method is safer for beneficial insects but requires precise application technique.
Good cultural practices, such as maintaining proper plant hydration and nutrition, are essential. Pruning out heavily infested branches and disposing of them can also help reduce the total population within the landscape.
