Adult females are wingless and stay attached to the host plant, where they feed by sucking sap from the phloem. Their bodies are usually oval and may feature lateral filaments of wax, which help in their visual identification.

The life cycle includes the mobile crawler stage (first instar), which is responsible for spreading the infestation to new parts of the plant or nearby hosts. Once they find a suitable feeding site, they become sedentary.

Males develop through a pseudo-pupal stage and emerge as small, winged insects capable of flying to locate females for mating. However, their adult life is extremely short, as they lack functional mouthparts.

Accurate identification of Dysmicoccus finitimus often requires microscopic examination of the pores and setae on the female's body to distinguish it from closely related mealybug species that share similar hosts.

Cultural practices, including proper sanitation and the removal of weeds that can host the pests, are essential for long-term management of the mealybug population.
