The Elizabeth mealybug (Delottococcus elisabethae) is a destructive sap-sucking pest belonging to the Pseudococcidae family. Adult females are characterized by an oval body covered in a white, waxy secretion that provides protection against adverse environmental conditions and chemical treatments.
Identifying this species can be challenging due to its morphological similarity to other mealybug species. Precise identification typically requires microscopic examination of structural features, such as the arrangement and density of wax glands and specific body setae.
This species is considered a quarantine pest in many jurisdictions. Because of its adaptability, the mealybug spreads rapidly through infested nursery stock, cuttings, and fruit, necessitating strict surveillance and phytosanitary measures.
The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females produce eggs within fluffy white sacs, known as ovisacs, which protect the offspring until the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge.
Populations can thrive in temperate and subtropical climates and are highly successful in greenhouse environments. This flexibility significantly increases its potential to establish itself in new regions and impact various agricultural sectors.
What it damages

Visible symptoms include leaf curling or chlorosis in areas where the pests are actively feeding. Severe infestations may lead to fruit drop and stunted internodal growth, which can be easily detected during routine vineyard inspections.
The presence of ants is a reliable indicator of a mealybug problem. Ants are attracted to the honeydew produced by the mealybugs and often protect them from natural predators, actively facilitating the spread of the pest throughout the vine.
On harvested fruit, the presence of the pest is manifested through pitted, discolored spots and overall loss of fruit marketability. Close inspection of clusters during the ripening period often reveals the insects hiding in the small spaces between berries.
Control measures
Phytosanitary control is the cornerstone of preventing the introduction of the Elizabeth mealybug. This includes strict inspection of imported planting material and the use of pheromone traps to monitor population levels and detect outbreaks early.
Cultural practices include proper canopy management, pruning of infested branches, and the removal of loose bark where pests overwinter. Maintaining clean orchard floors and controlling weeds that may act as alternative hosts is equally critical.
Chemical control necessitates the use of systemic insecticides, as the mealybug's waxy coating provides high resistance to conventional contact-based pesticides. Systemic applications ensure the active ingredient reaches the insect through plant sap.
