Mealybugs of the genus Cataenococcus belong to the family Pseudococcidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by the white, waxy, cotton-like secretions that cover the bodies of adult females.

Identification at the species level requires microscopic examination of the pores, ducts, and setae, as different species share a similar macroscopic appearance that can be difficult to distinguish in the field.

Adult females are generally sedentary, remaining attached to the host plant where they feed. Males, conversely, are winged, short-lived, and lack mouthparts, existing primarily for reproduction.

Chemical control is effective when using systemic insecticides, which are absorbed by the plant and provide a prolonged effect against sucking insects hidden in protected areas of the plant.
