Colonies typically reside in subterranean nests located in open, sun-exposed soil. The entrance to the nest is often marked by a small pile of excavated soil particles, making it visible during dry weather.

The life cycle follows the typical ant development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A single colony can contain thousands of individuals, enabling them to clear large areas of seeds within a short timeframe.

These ants are primarily granivorous, meaning their diet consists almost entirely of plant seeds. This feeding habit is the root cause of their designation as a pest in tropical and subtropical regions.
