Measuring about 2–3 mm in length, these ants are highly aggressive and are recognized as one of the world's most invasive ant species, frequently displacing native fauna.

They establish extensive colonies in the soil, often under debris, rocks, or near the base of plants, creating interconnected subterranean tunnels that span large areas.

Reproduction is rapid, and the species is capable of establishing supercolonies, especially in warm, humid climates where they thrive throughout the year.

What it damages

Big-headed ants cause significant indirect damage by tending and protecting sap-sucking insects like aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects from their natural predators.
