The colony exhibits polymorphism, meaning workers vary in size and task allocation. The queen resides deep within the underground nest, where she is responsible for reproduction and maintaining the colony's growth.

A defining biological characteristic of this species is its obligate symbiosis with Leucoagaricus fungi. Ants do not consume leaves directly but process them into a pulp that serves as a medium for their fungus gardens.

Their nests are complex underground architectures consisting of numerous chambers connected by tunnels. This environment provides the precise temperature and humidity required for the fungus to thrive.

What it damages

Signs of infestation

The most distinctive sign of a colony is the presence of well-defined ant trails. These paths stretch from the nest to the feeding sites and are often worn smooth by constant traffic.

Leaf damage is characterized by clean, arc-shaped cuts along the edges of the leaves. This pattern distinguishes their damage from the irregular chewing marks left by caterpillars or other chewing insects.

Observation of foraging ants carrying folded leaf fragments is a sure sign of a nearby nest. By tracking the direction of the foragers, one can easily locate the primary entrance to the colony.

Mounds of excavated soil around nest entrances are common indicators. These piles of fresh dirt appear on the surface as the ants clear their tunnels and expand their underground galleries.

Sudden, rapid defoliation of trees and bushes is a clear indicator of a mature colony. Immediate action is required to prevent the further spread of the infestation and protect neighboring fields.

Control measures

Controlling Acromyrmex laticeps is challenging due to the hidden nature of their nests. Contact insecticides applied to plants are often insufficient as they do not reach the queen or the internal fungus gardens.

The most successful strategy involves the use of toxic baits. The bait must be attractive to the ants so they carry it into the colony, where the slow-acting toxin can be spread among all members, including the queen.

Standard management includes using granulated baits formulated with active ingredients that interfere with the colony's symbiotic fungus, effectively starving the population and leading to its collapse.

Mechanical barriers, such as sticky bands around tree trunks, can offer temporary relief for individual specimens but fail to address the root of the problem, which is the subterranean nest itself.

Long-term protection relies on constant monitoring and the destruction of incipient nests. Early detection and intervention are crucial to preventing large-scale damage to agricultural and forest land.
