Oncastichus belongs to the Eulophidae family within the Hymenoptera order. These are minute parasitic wasps that, in agronomic practice, are recognized both as beneficial biocontrol agents and, in specific cases, as pests within controlled environments.
Adult individuals are microscopic insects, rarely exceeding 1-2 millimeters in body length. Their bodies typically exhibit dark, metallic coloration, which is a diagnostic trait for many members of this family.
Identification under field conditions is extremely difficult due to their tiny size. Accurate species determination requires specialized laboratory microscopy and taxonomic keys.
The life cycle is intimately tied to leaf-mining insects. Adult females utilize a specialized ovipositor to insert eggs either into the host's body or directly into plant tissue nearby.
