How to identify

The strobile gall midge (Aprostocetus strobilacea) is a small hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Eulophidae. It is a specialized parasite that targets the reproductive structures of conifer species, particularly spruce.

What it damages

The primary damage is inflicted on the seeds of the host trees. The larvae develop within the developing seeds, consuming the endosperm and embryo, which results in the total destruction of the potential planting material.

The infestation significantly reduces seed yields and impacts the regeneration potential of coniferous forests. This makes the pest a major threat to seed orchards and forest nurseries.

When it appears

The biological cycle of this midge is strictly synchronized with the phenology of spruce cone development. Adults emerge in spring, coinciding with the flowering period of the host trees.

The larvae overwinter inside the infested cones, where they remain protected until the following spring. This overwintering strategy ensures high survival rates and allows the pest to re-infest new cones efficiently.
