How to identify

The rose stem sawfly (Syrista similis) is a member of the Cephidae family. Adult insects are slender, wasp-like flies, approximately 10–12 mm long, characterized by a predominantly black body with clear wings.

The larvae are pale, yellowish-white false caterpillars with a distinct brown head capsule. They possess strong mandibles adapted for burrowing through the pith of young plant stems.

What it damages

This pest exclusively attacks roses (genus Rosa), including garden varieties and wild species. The damage is caused both by females laying eggs and by larvae feeding within the stem.

As the larva tunnels down through the center of the stem, it destroys the conductive tissues. This systemic damage leads to the wilting and death of the upper portion of the shoot.

When it appears

Adult sawflies emerge in late spring, typically in May. This period coincides with the intensive growth of young shoots, which are most attractive for the female's egg-laying activity.

The insect completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter inside the stems or in the soil near the base of the plant, remaining in a larval stage until they pupate in the following spring.

Signs of infestation

The primary symptom of infestation is the sudden wilting of young shoot tips. The affected shoots often droop in a characteristic hook-like shape, often referred to as a shepherd's crook.

Close inspection reveals small punctures or a series of dots on the shoot surface, marking the egg-laying sites. When splitting the stem, one can observe a hollowed-out channel filled with granular frass.

Control measures

Sanitation is the most effective management strategy. Gardeners should prune away wilting shoots immediately upon detection, cutting well below the damaged area to ensure the larva is removed.

Removed plant material must be destroyed by burning or disposal away from the garden, as larvae can complete their development in cut stems and emerge as adults in the following year.

For large-scale infestations, systemic insecticides can be applied during the flight period in May and June. These chemicals target the adults before they can lay their eggs.

Maintaining plant vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate hydration helps roses recover from mechanical damage caused by these insects.
