How to identify

The rose stem sawfly Syrista parreysii is a member of the Cephidae family. Adult insects are slender, measuring about 10–12 mm in length, with a black body that exhibits a noticeable metallic sheen.

The wings of the adult sawfly are transparent with distinct dark venation. Females are equipped with a specialized ovipositor, which they use to slice into the young, succulent shoots of roses to deposit their eggs.

The larvae are legless, creamy-white in color, and possess a distinct yellow or brownish head. When undisturbed, they often assume a characteristic S-shape within the plant stem.

The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. There is usually one generation per year, making the lifecycle of the insect highly synchronized with the growth phases of its host plant.

Overwintering occurs as mature larvae inside the stems of roses, where they pupate during the spring. The adults emerge just as the rose bushes begin their active growth period.

What it damages

The primary hosts for this pest are rose bushes and occasionally other members of the Rosaceae family. Damage is caused exclusively by the larvae, which feed by burrowing through the interior of the stems.

Female sawflies select the tender tips of young shoots for egg-laying. This site is chosen because the soft, rapidly growing tissues provide the larvae with easy access to nutrients once they hatch.

As the larva feeds, it tunnels through the center of the stem. This disrupts the plant's vascular system, preventing water and nutrients from reaching the upper parts of the shoot, leading to wilting and death.

The economic impact of the rose stem sawfly includes reduced flower production and loss of aesthetic appeal. Severe infestations can weaken the entire plant, making it more susceptible to secondary stressors.

Continuous internal feeding often forces the gardener to prune away significant portions of the plant, which may alter the intended structure and shape of the rose bush.

When it appears

Adult activity typically begins in late spring, usually May or early June. This period coincides with the emergence of the first wave of young growth on the rose bushes, which serves as the host for the eggs.

Throughout the summer months, the larvae continue their development within the stems. They move downward, expanding their tunnels and feeding on the pith, which sustains them through the warm season.

By late summer, the fully grown larvae settle in the lower sections of the stems, often near the base of the plant. They prepare the site for overwintering, waiting for the cold season to pass.

Successful management relies heavily on understanding this timing. Targeting the insects during their adult flight phase or early larval development is essential to prevent significant damage.

Monitoring the growth of new shoots during late spring is the best way to catch the early signs of infestation and implement control measures before the damage becomes extensive.

Signs of infestation

The most prominent sign of infestation is the sudden wilting and drooping of the shoot tips. The tip bends over and turns dark, creating a visible "shepherd's crook" shape.

Upon closer inspection, one might notice a series of tiny punctures along the stem where the female has deposited eggs. These punctures may appear as a spiraling pattern or a straight line.

Splitting an affected stem lengthwise will reveal a central tunnel filled with brown frass (larval excrement). Finding this tunnel is a definitive diagnostic feature of sawfly activity.

Affected stems may show signs of localized darkening or slight swelling as the plant attempts to react to the mechanical damage and the presence of the feeding larvae.

Neglecting these symptoms will lead to the complete death of the affected shoot down to the base, which eventually hampers the overall vigor and blooming potential of the rose plant.

Control measures

  • Sanitary pruning: Immediately cut back infested stems below the level of the tunnel and destroy the cuttings by burning.
  • Manual collection: Pick off adult sawflies in the early morning when they are sluggish and less likely to fly away.
  • Chemical control: Apply systemic insecticides during the peak of adult activity to prevent egg-laying and larval establishment.
  • Use of bio-pesticides: Utilize environmentally friendly products that target larvae upon contact or ingestion.
  • Good cultural practice: Ensure plants are well-watered and fertilized to promote strong tissue growth that is less prone to colonization.
