Janus (Latin Janus) belongs to the stem sawfly family (Cephidae), order Hymenoptera. This is a small insect with a slender body characteristic of its family.
Adult specimens typically display distinct coloration, often featuring dark or black elements, and possess developed wings for active flight.
The larvae are whitish or yellowish in color, exhibit a cylindrical body shape, and possess a well-developed head capsule adapted for feeding inside plant tissues.
Identification is often difficult due to the cryptic life cycle of the larvae within shoots, making the characteristic damage patterns the primary indicator.
For precise species identification, specialists usually examine adults during their flight period, which typically coincides with the active vegetation phase of host plants.
What it damages
Janus primarily affects woody and shrub species, specifically those within the pear genus and certain other fruit-bearing crops.
The damage is caused by larvae that penetrate young annual shoots and tunnel through them, feeding on the succulent internal tissues.
The main threat is the disruption of sap flow within the affected shoot, which leads to deformation and subsequent dieback of the tips.
