How to identify

Proctolaelaps pygmaeus is a microscopic mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Ascidae. Adult specimens have an oval-shaped body, approximately 0.3–0.4 mm in length, and vary in color from translucent to light brown.

These mites are typical substrate dwellers, commonly found in soil, decomposing organic matter, and stored agricultural products. They are highly mobile, allowing them to rapidly colonize new areas when conditions are favorable.

The biology of this species is closely linked to fungal microflora in the substrate, although at high population densities, they are capable of feeding directly on plant tissues.

The life cycle progresses through egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under optimal temperatures (20–25°C), the life cycle completes in 5–7 days, leading to rapid population growth.

The species is a cosmopolitan pest, causing the most significant damage in greenhouses, where controlled microclimates allow for year-round reproduction.

What it damages

The pest affects a wide range of crops, including vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes), ornamental plants, and commercial mushroom varieties (button mushrooms).

The mite can damage roots, root necks, and young shoots, causing gradual wilting and necrosis of plant tissues. It is particularly dangerous for seedlings and young greenhouse crops.

In mushroom farming, it is considered a serious pest as it actively feeds on the mycelium, leading to significant yield loss and reduced quality of the fruiting bodies.

In floriculture, Proctolaelaps can damage flower petals, causing necrotic spots, bud deformation, and premature shedding of petals.

The presence of these mites also facilitates the transmission of phytopathogenic fungal spores, which creates a favorable environment for secondary infections and rot on damaged plant parts.

Signs of infestation

The first sign of infestation is the appearance of small light spots on lower leaves or around the root collar, which subsequently darken and spread.

Plants may exhibit sudden stunted growth, curling leaves, and overall retardation of the root system, which is often misidentified as a nutrient deficiency.

In greenhouse settings, clusters of mites can be seen on the surface of moist soil, appearing as a thin, whitish, dust-like layer.

When mushroom cultures are affected, the mycelium loses density, turns yellow, and the substrate becomes unsuitable for the formation of fruiting bodies.

Microscopic examination of damaged tissues often reveals brown tracks and patches of epidermal necrosis caused by the feeding activity of mite colonies.

Control measures

The primary control strategy involves strict sanitary practices, such as regular disinfection of substrates and the complete removal of crop residues.

Microclimate management, specifically reducing air humidity and improving soil aeration, significantly limits the reproductive potential of the mite in greenhouse environments.

Chemical control includes the application of systemic and contact acaricides that are approved for use on specific crops to manage high population densities.

Biological control involves the use of predatory phytoseiid mites, such as Amblyseius cucumeris or Phytoseiulus persimilis, which are effective in regulating the pest population.
