The Quayle crane fly (Tipula quaylei) is a species of insect belonging to the Tipulidae family within the order Diptera. Adult flies resemble large mosquitoes, but they are completely harmless to humans as they do not possess biting mouthparts.
The adult insect has a very fragile body with long, spindly legs that break easily upon contact. The wings are well-developed, and the overall coloration is typically dull gray or brown, which aids in camouflage within the vegetation.
The larval stage is the most destructive phase for agriculture. These larvae are legless, cylindrical, and covered in a tough, dark-gray to earthy-colored skin, often making them blend in perfectly with moist soil.
The larva's head is partially retracted and equipped with robust mandibles used for chewing plant tissues. The posterior end of the abdomen features distinct, soft lobes used for breathing while submerged in soil.
The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult). Its survival and activity levels are highly dependent on soil moisture and ambient temperature conditions.
What it damages
This pest primarily attacks cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and oats. The larvae reside in the topsoil layer, where they feed on the roots, often causing total plant failure at the seedling stage.
Besides cereals, the larvae may infest pastures, lawns, and various other grasses. By destroying the root system, they prevent the plant from absorbing water and vital nutrients, leading to rapid decline.
High population densities can result in severe thinning of crop stands. Seedlings damaged by this pest often turn yellow, wilt, and perish, leading to significant yield losses in affected areas.
Damage is often most severe in poorly drained, moist soil or fields with high organic matter content, where larval survival rates are significantly higher compared to dry soils.
Since the feeding occurs underground, farmers may not notice the issue until large patches of dead or stunted crops appear across the field, making early monitoring essential.
When it appears
Adult Quayle crane flies are generally active in late summer and early autumn. This is when mating occurs, and females lay eggs in moist soil, specifically choosing areas with vegetation cover.
Larvae hatch in the fall and continue to feed on roots until the onset of colder temperatures, at which point they descend deeper into the soil profile to overwinter safely.
In spring, as soil temperatures rise, the larvae become highly active and resume intensive feeding on the roots of young winter and spring crops. This period represents the greatest threat to agricultural production.
Pupation takes place directly in the soil during late spring or early summer. This stage is relatively brief before the adults emerge, completing the yearly cycle.
Monitoring should be focused on soil sampling in the autumn to assess egg density and again in early spring to gauge the presence and size of the larvae before crop emergence.
Signs of infestation
The first signs of infestation are patches of crop death where seedlings show sudden yellowing or wilting, often without any surface-level indication of the cause.
Upon closer inspection, digging around the roots of affected plants usually reveals the presence of dark, leathery-skinned larvae. They are most visible after heavy rainfall or irrigation.
Root systems of damaged plants will appear shredded or entirely missing. This type of underground root pruning is a hallmark of crane fly larval feeding activity.
A secondary sign includes increased bird activity in fields, as birds often forage on the soil surface to feed on the larvae exposed by moisture or soil movement.
Confirming an infestation involves taking soil core samples and washing them to extract larvae, allowing for an accurate calculation of the pest population per square meter.
Control measures
Effective management begins with proper agronomic practices. Cultural control methods aimed at disrupting the lifecycle are the most sustainable approach for long-term reduction.
Deep autumn tillage is highly effective at exposing larvae to the surface, where they succumb to desiccation or predation by birds, significantly reducing their overwintering success.
