How to identify

The small crane fly (lat. Tipula parva) is a member of the crane fly family (Tipulidae), within the order Diptera. Adult flies resemble oversized mosquitoes with long, fragile legs, though they are harmless to plants and do not feed on crops.

The real damage is caused by their larvae, often referred to as leatherjackets. These larvae are cylindrical, legless, and typically greyish-brown in color, reaching 20–25 mm in length as they mature.

The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, four larval stages, pupa, and adult. Adults are most active at dusk and prefer moist environments for egg-laying.

Identification often involves soil sampling in affected areas. Because larvae reside underground, detecting them requires digging to a depth of several centimeters to inspect the root zone.

Agronomists use soil washing techniques or saline solutions to extract larvae from soil cores, allowing for an accurate assessment of population density per square meter.

What it damages

Small crane fly larvae are soil-dwelling pests that feed on organic matter and living plant tissues. They primarily target the roots and underground stems of various agricultural and ornamental plants.

Cereal crops, such as winter wheat and barley, are particularly susceptible. Larvae feed on the roots of young seedlings, causing significant thinning of the stand and leading to stunted growth or total crop failure.

Vegetable crops, including carrots, potatoes, and cabbage, often suffer when larvae gnaw at the taproots or base of the stems, creating wounds that invite secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Turf and grassland are also common victims. Leatherjackets eat the roots of the grass, causing the sod to turn yellow, thin out, and become easily detached from the soil surface when pulled.

In nursery settings, young saplings are at risk. Severe root damage impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, leading to progressive wilting and eventual death of the young trees.

When it appears

Adult small crane flies typically emerge in late spring and early summer. Mating and egg-laying occur during this period, with eggs deposited into damp soil enriched with decaying organic material.

Larval activity continues throughout the summer, but damage peaks in the autumn and again in early spring, as larvae feed voraciously before pupation or after emerging from winter dormancy.

Overwintering occurs in the soil, usually at a depth of 5–10 cm. During mild winters, larvae may continue to feed if soil temperatures remain above freezing, posing a persistent threat to winter crops.

When spring arrives and soil temperatures rise above 8–10°C, larvae move to the upper soil layers to feed on the root systems of newly germinating plants.

The pupation phase occurs in the soil during the summer months. After a brief period as a pupa, the adult fly emerges, effectively starting the next generation's life cycle.

Signs of infestation

The first signs of infestation often include patches of yellowing or wilting plants that appear suddenly, which can be misdiagnosed as drought stress or root rot disease.

In lawns and fields, small, irregular bare patches may appear. This suggests a cluster of larvae feeding concentratedly in that specific area, destroying the root structure beneath the soil.

Inspecting the base of the stem often reveals gnaw marks or severed tissues. Digging into the soil around a symptomatic plant will typically reveal the presence of greyish larvae.

Increased bird activity, such as starlings or crows frequently picking at the soil surface, is a strong indicator of a high leatherjacket population available for them to eat.

Symptoms are usually most pronounced in fields with poor drainage or areas that remain excessively moist, as crane fly larvae thrive in wet conditions.

Control measures

Cultural control is the first line of defense. Deep autumn plowing with moldboard inversion helps expose larvae to predators and environmental stress, significantly reducing their survival rate.

Weed management is critical, as dense weed cover creates the moisture-retaining, shaded environment that adult flies prefer for laying eggs. Eliminating weeds reduces the field's attractiveness.

Crop rotation should be implemented, alternating susceptible crops with those that are less attractive or more resistant to crane fly larval damage to break the pest cycle.

Chemical control involves the use of soil-applied insecticides or seed treatments. These are most effective when applied at planting to protect young root systems during the critical early growth phases.

  • Improvement of drainage systems to prevent waterlogged soil.
  • Monitoring larval density using soil traps before planting.
  • Biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernema spp.).
