How to identify
Pseudosciara pedunculata belongs to the Sciaridae family, commonly known as fungus gnats, within the order Diptera. Adult specimens are small, dark-colored flies typically measuring 3–5 millimeters in length.
The adults are distinguished by their long, slender legs and antennae. Their wings are transparent, often featuring a distinct wing venation pattern characteristic of the Sciaridae family.
The larvae of this species are vermiform, legless, and possess a distinct, dark-colored (usually black) head capsule. The body is translucent, allowing the contents of the digestive tract to be visible through the skin.
Development occurs through complete metamorphosis, comprising egg, four larval stages, pupa, and adult stages. This life cycle is typical for most species of fungus gnats found in agricultural environments.
In natural settings, these pests prefer humid environments rich in organic matter, where the larvae feed and develop under moist conditions.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by larvae that dwell in the upper soil layers, growing media, or decaying organic material. They feed on the delicate roots and root collars of young plants.
They are particularly destructive to seedlings in greenhouses and nurseries. Larvae tunnel into root tissues, disrupting nutrient uptake and causing overall plant stress and stunted growth.
Damaged roots become susceptible to secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens, such as fungal rots and bacteria, which can rapidly lead to the collapse and death of the seedling.
Adult gnats, although not feeding on plant tissues directly, act as vectors for various plant pathogens and fungal spores, spreading diseases across the growing area.
High moisture levels in the substrate combined with the presence of fresh, uncomposed organic matter create ideal conditions for rapid population growth and significant crop damage.
Signs of infestation
The most immediate sign of an infestation is the presence of adult gnats flying erratically over the soil surface or around the foliage when plants are watered.
Seedlings show signs of poor growth, yellowing, and loss of turgor, even when irrigation appears sufficient. Root inspection usually reveals tissue erosion or rotting.
During heavy infestations, thin, silky threads may be visible on the surface of the growing medium, produced by larvae as they move through the substrate.
Wilting of established plants in pots often indicates that larvae have already compromised the main root system and vascular tissues.
Yellow sticky traps are highly effective for detecting the presence of adults and monitoring the severity of the infestation early in the season.
Control measures
The primary preventive measure is to manage soil moisture. Ensure that the top few centimeters of the substrate are allowed to dry out completely between waterings.
Avoid using unsterilized potting mixes with high concentrations of decaying organic matter, which attract adult females for egg-laying.
For larval control, apply biological insecticides based on Beauveria bassiana or Bacillus thuringiensis as a soil drench to effectively target the larval stages.
In commercial greenhouse settings, systemic soil-applied insecticides can be used to mitigate larval activity in the root zone during critical growth phases.
